Dating back to 1954, Hilton Hawaiian Village has played host to many celebrities, heads of state and presidents. So how did they get connected with Spoonflower? Have you tried your hand at calligraphy, the DIY trend that’s adding a personal touch to projects like wedding invitations, wall art and even fabric? If you’ve been eager to give this trend a try, you’re in luck because we’re excited to welcome Kathy Glynn, the artist and author behind Hand Lettering Step by Step: Techniques & Projects to Express Yourself Creatively, for a two part series showing you how to transform your hand lettering into a fabric design.
In today’s installment, Kathy will share the first step of this project: taking your lettering from paper to pixel.
Forget boring black luggage! Customize your travel essentials with unique designs and DIY projects that complement your own personal style. Fabric luggage tags are quick to sew and only require a fat quarter of fabric (we recommend Lightweight Cotton Twill), making them the perfect project or gift for anyone with the travel bug. Watch the video below, or follow along with the step by step tutorial.
The sun is out and we’re headed to the beach to meet maker and designer Jo Kalute of the women’s swimwear brand Clovelly Cozzies based out of Sydney, Australia. Inspired by sea-side living and Jo’s African heritage, Clovelly Cozzies offers timeless beauty that is accessible to women all across the globe. Not summer-ready in your part of the world? A unique thing about Jo is that she offers the designs she features on her swimwear line in her Spoonflower shop. (We’re loving her Many Hands Print on the Inari Crop Tee available on Sprout Patterns.) It was such a pleasure getting to know Jo and you’re going to love this feature—so suit up and dive in!
My day starts with…
“A healthy breakfast of muesli, yogurt, and fruit followed by a hot cup of coffee. I love to brew my own coffee at home and experiment with different blends. I’m partial to Kenyan coffee!”
Can you believe Spoonflower’s very first design challenge was held almost 8 years ago? The daffodils theme challenged the Spoonflower community for the very first time and holli_zollinger’s daffodils_yellow won the hearts of the community as she took home our very first grand prize. Since then, the weekly prompts have made Thursdays our favorite day of the week (after Saturday, of course!). We can’t wait to see what designs make it into the winners’ circle during our May and June challenges.
If this is your very first challenge, don’t forget to review how to submit an entry before you get started and as always, have fun!

Spoonflower strives to ensure that our fabrics are good for you and good for the earth. From our low-waste digital print process and organic fabric options to paper options certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), we seek to provide products made safely and sustainably. While the textile industry is rife with sustainability problems, see how Spoonflower has worked hard to reverse this direction.
To set the stage for an eco-friendly gathering, we turned to our pals at Cherry Blossom Events, who have an eye for throwing themed parties with a sustainable edge. Their team was inspired by Spoonflower designs that evoked nature in all its finery–from ocean waves and bold botanicals to playful tree prints. Keep reading to find out the five ways you can throw a greener party.
