Artist Spotlight: Hispanic Heritage Month

This month, and every month, we’re proud to showcase the cultural diversity of the Spoonflower Artist Community. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re introducing you to four Hispanic, Latinx and Chicana artists who have shared how their cultures influence their designs, plus their best advice for other artists.

Para celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, te presentamos a cuatro artistas hispanos, latinos y chicanos que han compartido el modo en que sus culturas influyen en sus diseños, además de sus consejos para otros artistas.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, the love for my culture is embedded, especially after living in New York while studying fashion design in college. That’s why our bestselling collection is inspired by the tropical fruits you can enjoy when visiting Puerto Rico. Inspiration can come not only from our fruits but also from our beautiful beaches, our music, and of course, from our people: We are the perfect blend of the Taíno, Spaniard and African! 

Oriunda de Puerto Rico, el amor por mi cultura está arraigado, especialmente después de vivir en Nueva York mientras cursaba diseño de moda en la universidad. Por ello, nuestra colección más vendida está inspirada en las frutas tropicales que puedes disfrutar cuando visitas Puerto Rico. La inspiración puede venir no solo de nuestras frutas sino también de nuestras hermosas playas, nuestra música y, por supuesto, de nuestra gente: ¡somos la mezcla perfecta de taíno, español y africano!

I want them to feel happy, enjoy our colorful prints and get inspired to make something pretty with them. I always say there’s no such thing as too much fabric, and when you design a print someone loves, it motivates a maker to keep creating. 

Quiero que se sientan felices, que disfruten de nuestros coloridos estampados y que se inspiren para hacer algo bonito con ellos. Siempre digo que no existe el exceso de tela, y cuando diseñas un estampado que a alguien le encanta, motiva al creador a seguir creando. 

Enjoy the ride, experiment and feel free to be imperfect! Perfectionism can be a way of procrastination. 

¡Disfruta del viaje, experimenta y siéntete libre de ser imperfecto! El perfeccionismo puede ser una forma de procrastinación.

Growing up in a Mexican-American household, I believe there are specific memories and images from my childhood that connect many of us. What I try to do with my art is capture those memories so that they can live forever. Currently, I’m living in South Korea, and although it’s beautiful here, I miss hearing a bell and running outside to chase the elotero down. I miss waking up early in the morning to hot chocolate and pan tostado because I didn’t finish my homework the day prior. These were all magical moments to me as a kid, and I want to honor that. 

Al crecer en un hogar mexicano-estadounidense, creo que hay recuerdos e imágenes específicas de mi infancia que nos conectan a muchos de nosotros. Lo que trato de hacer con mi arte es capturar esos recuerdos para que puedan vivir para siempre. Actualmente, vivo en Corea del Sur, y aunque es hermoso aquí, extraño escuchar una campana y correr afuera para perseguir al elotero. Extraño despertarme temprano por la mañana con chocolate caliente y pan tostado porque no terminé mi tarea el día anterior. Todos estos fueron momentos mágicos para mí cuando era niña, y es lo que quiero honrar. 

When I was a little girl, I would try flipping tortillas on the stove with just my bare fingers. I couldn’t do it for a long time because the fire kept burning me. However, my dad would flip the tortilla so easily without burning himself. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. Nowadays, I can flip tortillas and even though it’s a lot easier for me, I still remember the joy I felt from watching my father as a little girl. I hope people look at my designs and feel the same sense of childlike joy and awe. 

Cuando era niña, intentaba voltear tortillas en la estufa usando solo mis dedos. No podía hacerlo durante mucho tiempo porque el fuego me quemaba. No obstante, mi papá volteaba la tortilla tan fácilmente sin quemarse. Pensaba que era la cosa más genial del mundo. Hoy en día puedo voltear tortillas y aunque es mucho más fácil para mí, todavía recuerdo la alegría que sentía al ver a mi padre cuando de niña. Espero que la gente mire mis diseños y sienta la misma sensación de alegría y asombro infantil. 

My advice to other artists is don’t try to paint what you think would sell. Paint what is true and special to you. 

Also, to avoid burnout, don’t tie yourself down to one medium or even just art in general. You are a beautiful human being, not a factory. For this reason, I don’t just do patterns. I also paint, make sculptures, play music and dance around my living room. And I don’t just do art. I also teach English and Spanish, practice taekwondo, go on hikes and do nothing with friends.  

So live life, try new things and always remember to reconnect with your sacred memories. For a long while, I was hesitant to start designing patterns, but my mom kept encouraging me to try it and it has ended up being one of the things I love to do the most! Thank you to my mom, dad, my brothers and my grandparents for supporting me! 

Mi consejo para otros artistas es que no intenten pintar lo que creen que vendería. Pinta lo que es verdadero y especial para ti. 

Además, para evitar el agotamiento, no te ates a un solo medio o al arte en general. Eres un hermoso ser humano, no una fábrica. Por esta razón, no solo hago patrones. También pinto, hago esculturas, toco música y bailo en la habitación. Y no solo hago arte. También enseño inglés y español, practico taekwondo, hago caminatas y paso el tiempo con amigos. 

Así que vive la vida, prueba cosas nuevas y recuerda siempre reconectarte con tus recuerdos sagrados. Durante mucho tiempo, dudé en comenzar a diseñar patrones, pero mi mamá me animó a intentarlo y terminó siendo una de las cosas que más me gusta hacer. ¡Gracias a mi mamá, mi papá, mis hermanos y mis abuelos por apoyarme!

My Chicana culture influences EVERYTHING about my art, but I think it’s especially evident in my subject matter and color palette. 

Mi cultura chicana lo influye TODO en mi arte, pero creo que es especialmente evidente en mi tema y paleta de colores. 

I hope people feel the fun, fuerte (strong) and nostalgic energy behind my designs. 

Espero que la gente sienta la energía divertida, fuerte y nostálgica que hay detrás de mis diseños.

My art is all influenced by my culture. The colors, the shapes, the fruits and the vegetation are all inspirations. I am Puerto Rican, we love bright colors, bold designs, flowers and tropical plants! We are warm hearted, kind and loud. Somehow, I add a bit of all this in my designs. I like to show my “mancha de platano” in my designs. 

Mi arte está influenciado por mi cultura. Los colores, las formas, las frutas y la vegetación son todas inspiraciones. ¡Soy puertorriqueña, nos encantan los colores brillantes, los diseños atrevidos, las flores y las plantas tropicales! Somos cálidos, amables y ruidosos. De alguna manera, añado un poco de todo esto en mis diseños. Me gusta mostrar mi “mancha de platano” en mis diseños. 

I hope they feel happiness and inspired. 

Espero que sientan felicidad e inspiración. 

Be yourself. Also, don’t be afraid to try something new or something old. You’ll never know where it will take you. 

Sé tú mismo. No tengas miedo de probar algo nuevo o algo antiguo. No sabes dónde te puede llevar.
