Materials
- Fabric—we’re using two swatches of Spoonflower’s Satin featuring designs by ivieclothco
- Scissors
- Pins
- Ribbon
- Fiberfill
Start by cutting out your fabric–we’ll need two squares. Mine are 7.5”, but you can use whatever size you want. Spoonflower swatches are 8″ x 8″, so you could use that entire amount for your pillow (minus the tiny bit of selvage).
Zig-zag stitch or serge around the edges of each square. This stabilizes the fabric and will prevent the seams from coming out. Pro tip: If you are using a less slippery fabric like cotton, this step is optional.
Next, pin the squares right sides together and sew with 1/2” seam allowance, leaving a small gap to turn inside out.
Clip the corners to remove bulk.
Turn your fabric inside out, pin, and sew around the edge again with a 3/8” allowance, still leaving the same opening from before.
Stuff pillow with fiberfill or another filling, as full as you want–we want ours to look nice and plump.
Next, sew the opening closed. I’m using my sewing machine, but you could also hand stitch it for a cleaner, more polished look.
Finally, we’re going to add a ribbon to our pillow. This part is simple, but it’s easy to get lost so pay close attention: Grab a needle and thread, and fold a length of ribbon in half. We’re using 12″ inches for our pillow, but you can adjust your length based on the size of your pillow. Cut the ribbon and thread your needle, and insert the needle into the center of the ribbon. Now, insert the needle into the top of the pillow in the center. Pull the thread through until the ribbon rests in the center of the pillow.
Insert the needle back into the pillow from the bottom and up through the front, very close to your first stitch.
Pull the thread tight to create a dimple in the pillow, and trim off the excess thread.
Finally, tie a simple, decorative knot with the ribbon to hide the thread. You’re finished–now it’s ready for your big day.
