Me Made May, a movement started by Zoe Edwards to celebrate handmade apparel, is Spoonflower’s favorite month of the year! Around this time, we invite our employees to pick any fabric design from the Spoonflower Marketplace to use for an apparel-based sewing project. However, May seems like a long time to wait just to add something handmade to our wardrobes… so we’re bringing the sewing spirit into the winter season!
This May December, we’re partnering with our friends from True Bias to stitch some their Hudson Pant pattern—comfy joggers perfect for cozying up with your loved ones around a fireplace, but elevated enough to dash out for a last-minute errand. Continue reading to explore 25 custom pairs of jogger pants, featuring designs from fun florals to small sea creatures.
Jump for joy in your own handmade joggers with this Hudson Pants sewing pattern from True Bias. Explore fabrics like Organic Cotton Knit or Cotton Spandex Jersey for a more traditional feel, or test the boundaries by experimenting with Polartec® Fleece or Performance Velvet.

Fabric choice: I chose Fleece because I wanted something extra soft and cozy to curl up in, I was going for classic pajamas more than anything. (Note: As of March 2023, we are phasing out our Fleece fabric and launching Polartec® Fleece, which will also work great for this project!)
Design choice: This Textured Banana design by whimsical_brush caught my eye due to its bright pink and yellow colors, plus it was the perfect scale for joggers. Now I can strut around in “Anna’s Banana Pajamas.”
Pattern modifications: I made the pockets out of some solid pink blanket material I had left over from another sewing project. Now I have hand warmers!
Fabric choice: I chose Cotton Spandex Jersey because it is very soft and stretchy.
Design choice: I chose a Hanukkah design, Eight Nights of Light by edsel2084, because it is coming up. I needed to celebrate it in style.
Pattern modifications: The only modification I made was to leave off the drawstring because I am very much a beginner and it was a daunting task.
Fabric choice: I picked Modern Jersey. I’ve been recently obsessed, as it has the nicest drape and gorgeous color results!
Design choice: I loved the blues with the pop of yellow in Weeds I Love by fernlesliestudio. I wanted a soft and warm design to go with the vision I had for these comfy house pants.
Pattern modifications: I added 2″ (5 cm) to the rise, and narrowed the waistband down by 1/2″ (1.3 cm). I wanted these pants to sit at my natural waist, which is pretty high, and I wanted the narrower waistband because it seemed like it might be more comfortable on my body; and, I had 1” (2.5 cm) elastic in my stash already!
Fabric choice: I chose Cotton Spandex Jersey because I wanted something super comfortable to wear as pajamas this winter. Cotton Spandex Jersey is so stretchy and soft!
Design choice: I chose EDELWEISS Olive by melimba because I love a good vintage floral, especially for loungewear.
Pattern modifications: I made the pattern with no modifications, but I squeezed out enough fabric to also make a Grainline Studios Hemlock tee to complete my loungewear look.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit, it is soft and comfortable.
Design choice: I chose Monochrome Minimal Leopard. It’s cute and I liked the black background. I’d like to wear it with my daughter for a matching look.
Pattern modifications: I made the size a bit smaller than my size.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit because it’s soft, stretchy and a thick enough weight for bottoms.
Design choice: I chose Pink Shrimp Pattern by alenkakarabanova. I always really enjoy when fabric patterns feature unexpected motifs you wouldn’t normally see on fabric. As a huge seafood lover, these shrimps have been on my “favorites” list for quite a while and when the opportunity to make joggers came up, I knew it was finally their time to shine!
Pattern modifications: I did not make any modifications to the original pattern, but I did make a matching pet bandana for my pup!
Fabric choice: I chose Cotton Spandex Jersey because I love how soft and comfy the fabric feels against the skin.
Design choice: Red Deco by kimatolmandesignstudio is a beautiful and sophisticated design that also reminds me of the holidays with that deep maroon.
Pattern modifications: I used a ribbed knit that I had in my stash to add a contrasting color to the waist band, pocket detail and ankles. I also didn’t put in the drawstring because they always feel uncomfortable to me, so that saved me a step!
Fabric choice: I chose our Organic Cotton Knit. I wanted something thick enough that I didn’t have to line it, but not too heavy so I could wear it in warmer weather. I’ve made robes with our knit before as well, and I’ve loved how easy it is to sew and how cozy it ends up being.
Design choice: I picked kellygilleran’s Coconut Chocolate Cupcake design. I love her vintage food designs, and the fact that she has one of my favorite garbage snack foods made me really happy. It felt like a good design for pants that will probably be worn while I sit around my house eating garbage.
Fabric choice: I picked Organic Cotton Knit, it’s perfect for staying warm and comfy at home.
Design choice: I choose this, literally, adorable design by littlearrowdesign (so everybody can know). It was one of the first designs I saw when I started working here and I always told myself that one day I’ll sew something with it. Now it’s done! The colors remind me of Barbie and it’s a perfect match for a pajama party dancing on the bed and listening to Britney.
Pattern modifications: I added 5 cm (2”) to the length on the leg and made it slightly tighter on my waist.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit because I love how soft it is and also that it’s organic for the kiddos. While it doesn’t have as much stretch as the pattern called for, I just made sure to round up to the next size based on the measurements.
Design choice: I picked Christmas Knits in the pink and blue colorways by misstiina. I love a good fair isle pattern, and this one was perfectly playful enough for my twins.
Pattern modifications: I skipped the drawstring and the triple lines at the waistband, since I wanted to make PJ-style pants for my kiddos (plus I wanted to simplify since I don’t have much free time). Otherwise, I was true to the pattern, which is a new favorite.
Fabric choice: I picked Performance Velvet. I wanted the challenge of sewing with it, and a less casual look.
Design choice: I wanted a vertical orientated design. When I found Sewing Notions Art Deco Zippers, I had to use it and it confirmed my choice of using Performance Velvet. I received lots of compliments from my co-workers on the open zipper arch detail.
Pattern modifications: I didn’t add the pocket detail. It was four layers of velvet and very bulky. I used the velvet for the waistband and the cuffs. I only did elastic and not the buttonholes and drawstring. I hope to make another pair in Performance Velvet and do an elastic waistband with a medium wide satin ribbon for the drawstring. Serging the waistband and not folding it over cut out a lot of bulk, from five to three layers.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit because it has a little stretch, but is soft and not too clingy.
Design choice: I picked Hippy Cats ochre by robynhammonddesign because it’s a fun take on leopard print and can be worn with a lot of my favorite colors.
Pattern modifications: I made the legs longer and skipped the drawstring to avoid extra bulk. If I had it to do over again, I would have done a smaller size, as they came out very big. The pattern says it’s a slim fit and to go up a size if you don’t want them tight. but up a size was actually more like two sizes. I’m working on another pair in a smaller size and am also doing back pockets instead of side pockets along with a slightly longer torso.
Fabric choice: Organic Cotton Knit because I wanted something cozy!
Design choice: Cats in Sweaters. Fair Isle. by kostolom3000 because cats + knitting = win.
Pattern modifications: I am actually wearing imposter pants above, because that’s me wearing Elaine’s pants (Thanks, Elaine)! As a new sewist determined to work with my grandmother’s beloved sewing machine, I ended up with many, many bobbin jams working with knits for the first time! Many hours of YouTube videos and repair work later, I still couldn’t get my machine to sew knits, so I ended up ultimately buying a new machine that could better handle knits and hardier fabric along with a walking foot recommended to me by a team member. Another team tip passed along to me for sewing knits was putting tissue paper on top of the fabric in order to keep it from being sucked down into your bobbin and creating a great big mess! I also found this Tilly and the Buttons post on how to keep your machine from swallowing fabric helpful too!
Fabric choice: The fabric I chose was Sport Lycra. I chose this because I am 8 months pregnant and wanted something that would give me maximum stretch while also looking sleek.
Design choice: The design I picked is called Leopard Parade Magenta, which is a bright raspberry color with beautiful leopards. It really speaks to my fun and flirty side, but also the leopards felt a little regal and classy. I think it was a perfect blend to show my personality whether I’m lounging at home or out with the girls.
Pattern modifications: I considered making a maternity waistband but ran out of time. I sized up about three sizes and really liked the way the fabric hung.
Fabric choice: Organic Cotton Knit is a soft and comfortable fabric with a bit more substance than some of the other knit/jersey fabrics on our site. I did wonder if the 25% stretch would be enough so I rounded up on the size and the finished product fit perfectly. The complementary fabric was Cotton Spandex Jersey, which makes good sense for the waistband, pocket details and ankle collars since it has a 50% stretch.
Design choice: Well-defined limiters are essential to my creative process and style choices. For example, I only wear red lounge pants. Why? My father rocked a notorious red jumper throughout my childhood that earned him the nickname “Red Jelly Bean.” I wear red jumpers to this day to continue the family legacy. As a multi-planet Taurus about to make house pants, I typed in “sleepy taurus” and was drawn to this oversized Year of the Ox design. I liked the red colors and felt like the size of the oxen — gotta love those rulers around the design window—would abstract nicely on the garment and ensure a story that worked on multiple levels. The complement fabric, Polka Dot Black on Red, was a perfect find from the Marketplace shelves that matched in color and rhymed with the background designs around each ox.
Pattern modifications: I reduced the vertical width of the waistband by a 1/2″ (1.3 cm) because a) I didn’t have the proper elastic and b) the pattern was a bit too wide for my liking. This pattern is drafted for a 6′ tall person. When my yoga practice is on point, I’m 5’10, at most, so I shortened the length by 1.5″ (3.8 cm). I also topstitched the edges of the waistband, ankle collars and pocket details to the garment, as well. I wish I had made the pockets a touch deeper. That said, I’ve made set-in slash pockets before, but never with pocket details. This not only simplified the garment’s construction, but it also made for a nicer finished product since adding the secondary pattern was a breeze.
Fabric choice: I picked Modern Jersey. Since I was going with a black heavy print, I wanted to make sure I went with a polyester fabric to ensure the richness and longevity of the black. I was originally going to go with Performance Velvet, but since I had never made pants before I wanted to go with an easier to work with fabric that wasn’t too thick. I also lined my pants with some blank Cotton Spandex Jersey since I was worried the Modern Jersey might be too thin. The result was a fairly thick pant with a pretty good weight! It is a bit too thick for my liking to be a sleepwear pant, but it’s perfect for a wearable outdoor pant.
Design choice: I chose Halloween Cats by olgasoi007. Picking one design from their collection was so difficult (Strange Crows, How to Catch a Unicorn, Cats and Bananas and Dogs and Bones were also top contenders!) There are so many delightful and unusual patterns to pick from. I also really like their art style and design sense. I hope they make a Krampus pattern soon!
Pattern modifications: Next time I’ll probably make the pockets a little shorter length-wise. They pucker out a fair amount, it’s like begging someone to throw something in them. We noticed that the Men’s Hudson Pant pattern has really nice deep pockets that the Hudson Pant size 14-30 pattern and the Hudson Pant pattern lacks, so if I was doing those patterns I’d probably want to swap the pockets. Deep pockets for all!
Fabric choice: I chose Modern Jersey because of how soft the fabric is, plus it has some stretch to it.
Design choice: I picked Line Art Abstract and Gestural Hands.
Pattern modifications: I added some length to the bottom so I could wear them full length or scrunch them for a sportier look. I also added a pocket on the side because you can never have too many pockets!
Fabric choice: I chose Cotton Spandex Jersey because I wanted a fabric with 4-way stretch that was heavy enough for apparel. Cotton Spandex Jersey is medium weight and perfect for joggers that can go from loungewear to running errands.
Design choice: I chose holli_zollinger’s Playa Marok design. I’m loving the color green lately and this particular design is extra fun because it can read as “holidays!” or just as “hi, I wear fun clothes!”
Fabric choice: I chose Sport Lycra. I wanted a stretchy fabric that would move with me if I decided to actually use my joggers for, well, jogging. But I knew Sport Lycra would be equally comfortable lounging at home as well.
Design choice: I love Patricia Lima’s designs and usually choose her fun and whimsical designs for my son. But I was so excited to be able to use one of her beautiful paper cut out designs, Paper Cut Flowers, for myself!
Pattern modifications: I lengthened the legs to match my own inseam. I also put some darts in the front to make it lay a bit flatter.
Fabric choice: I chose Cotton Spandex Jersey for my joggers.
Design choice: I chose Dino Pajama Party by hnldesigns. The longer I looked at it, the more details I noticed. Boba tea, bunny slippers, avocado PJs – the design has it all!
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit — it’s soft and comfy but still fairly lightweight and breathable, which is perfect when North Carolina winter temperatures can range from below freezing to balmy.
Design choice: I chose 8-Bit Vintage Video Game by milva_art. Wintertime in my house is game season — my husband and I love to play board games and video games by our fireplace on cold winter nights, and I wanted some game-inspired sweats to wear for the occasion. Plus, I wanted to choose a design that my son might like too, so when he’s big enough for the Mini Hudson Pant pattern we can match (until he’s TOO big to think matching Mom is cool, anyway).
Pattern modifications: I made this pair straight from the pattern and they fit well, but for my next pair I will likely draft a higher waist — I prefer mid to high rise pants, and these are a solid low rise fit.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit for my joggers.
Design choice: I picked Bird of Paradise by amy_maccready.
Pattern modifications: I made them tighter because I thought they were too wide on me.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit because it is stretchy and cozy
Design choice: I picked Chips by maja_björk.
Pattern modifications: I made them in a larger model to feel more relaxed. I also modified the waistband, since I couldn’t figure out how it was supposed to be done. I added a top made from the scraps to make a whole chips look!
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit. I went with this because it is a good weight and pair perfectly with a fleece lining!
Design choice: I picked Modern Geometry by sosarahb. I’ve been wanting to make a pair of comfy pants with one of my designs and thought that this was a great option. The scale was perfect for apparel in general.
Pattern modifications: I used silver grommets for the drawstring holes instead of using button holes, I wanted something sturdier. I also added a fleece lining, which turned them into sweatpants essentially, still super comfy! The next time I make some, I won’t put in a lining for a dark print.
Fabric choice: I chose Organic Cotton Knit because I wanted a thicker, stretchier fabric for maximum comfort and warmth.
Design choice: I chose the Sashiko Circles by forest&sea because I like fairly neutral tones and patterns for the bottom half of my body and the faded jean colored fabric would blend easily color-wise with any tops I would normally wear with jeans. Indigo and white is always going to be an appealing color combo. I enjoyed that the design looks like moon phases from a distance but has interesting details up close. My favorite part about this design is that it gave me a great learning opportunity to research the historical context and complex design of Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidering technique based on necessity, beauty, and mindfulness.
Pattern modifications: I completed my waistband, cuffs, and pocket details in a darker navy fabric to subtly contrast the main fabric. I also chose a slightly different type of waist tie for aesthetic and utilization reasons.

Hi Loralea,

Great post! I’ve been eyeing the Hudson Joggers pattern for awhile now & it was super helpful to see all the different fabric bases that everyone chose!
Oh my goodness! I’m not sure which I love more, they are all so cute! Maybe the dinos with avocados. I just love the unexpected. And that added pocket, AWESOME!
So many fun pairs, right? We love me-made projects like this because they bring so much creativity!
