DIY Nursery Mobile with Petal Signature Cotton

Australian designer Laura Wright tried out Spoonflower’s Petal in this DIY nursery mobile featuring two swatches of her koala cut-and-sew design. Before you get started on your version, see why Laura is loving Petal.

“The weight of Petal feels stronger, which made it easier to cut out my shapes. After washing it, the prints stayed really vibrant and soft, just what I need for my cut-and-sew projects.”

Koala Nursery Mobile Materials

  • Two 8″ swatches of Koala Mama and Baby on Petal Signature Cotton*
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand needle
  • Thread
  • Fiberfill
  • 7″ embroidery hoop
  • Four 20″ long piece of twine
  • Three 16″ long piece of twine
  • Twine to hang mobile from the ceiling
  • Yarn for pom poms – I’m using mint, white and pink
  • Pom Pom maker or cardboard + pom pom template
  • Paper scissors

*One 8″ swatch will make one koala and one eucalyptus leaf. For a larger mobile with four koalas and four eucalyptus leaves, order Laura’s design on a fat quarter of Petal Signature Cotton.

1. Cut out all the fabric pieces. In one swatch you should have: one koala front, one koala back, one eucalyptus front and one eucalyptus back.

2. Pin the right sides of the koala together.

3. Tie a knot in one of the 20″ pieces of twine and insert into the pinned panels so the knot is hanging out and and the long piece of twine is tucked inside.

4. Sew around the koala and eucalyptus, making sure to leave a 1″ opening.

5. Clip the curves and turn right side out.

6.  Stuff with the fiberfill. Remember that you have to hand-stitch the opening closed so don’t overstuff!

7. Hand-stitch the opening closed.

8. Repeat the above steps for the eucalyptus leaf.

9. To make the pom pom, cut two discs of cardboard with hole inside using the free disc template.

10. Place the two discs together and wrap the yarn around the discs until you’ve filled the center whole.

11. Slide your scissors in between the discs and cut the yarn.

12. Using an extra piece of yarn, tie it around centre of the cut yarn.

13. Fluff out the pom pom and give it a haircut!

14. Repeat until you have 10 different colour pom poms.

15. Thread the pom poms onto the koala and leaf twines at different heights. I recommend adding a knot in the twine helps secure the pom poms.

16. Wrap twine around the embroidery hoop until it’s all covered – tie off the ends.

Pro tip: Wrap the twine around your embroidery hoop in four sections.

17. Tie the three 16″ twine pieces to the embroidery hoop. Make a loop at the top by gathering all the pieces toward the centre and tying a knot. To cover the knot at the top, add a pom pom!

18. Tie the hanging koalas and leaves to the embroidery hoop and slide them around the hoop until you get the balance just right.

19. Attach to ceiling with a ceiling hook.

Customize your yarn colors to match the nursery décor.
