In 2013, Princess Awesome co-founders Rebecca Melsky and Eva St. Clair couldn’t find an awesome dinosaur print to make into a girl’s twirly dress. They didn’t want a print that looked like it belonged on boys’ sheets, and they didn’t just want to turn all the dinosaurs pink and put pearls on them. They wanted a print that was vibrant, clever, cute, and fun – so they turned to Spoonflower, and the rest is history.

Introducing the Princess Awesome Design Challenge | Spoonflower Blog

Spoonflower’s designers had already imagined a whole world of dinosaurs, robots, sea monsters, ninjas, and other amazing STEM and adventure-themed patterns that fit perfectly with the mission of their company. After two years of producing basic girls’ dresses in Eva’s basement on an old 1948 Singer sewing machine, the partners launched a Kickstarter campaign to move Princess Awesome into factory production. And they took Spoonflower along with them!

Having ordered fabric featuring a variety of patterns by Spoonflower designer robyriker, Eva and Rebecca contacted her to see if she would create exclusive patterns for their first products. To their pleasant surprise, they soon found out Elishka was also a rocket scientist during the day! Elishka licensed three of her Spoonflower patterns (pieces of pi, periodic shells, and super pink ninja warriors), and created two more (“She-Rex” dinosaurs and Skull-and-Cross-”bow”nes pirates) just for Princess Awesome.

Over the last five years, Princess Awesome has continuously come to Spoonflower to find new patterns and designers. Being able to order fabric to create prototypes has given them the opportunity to easily test out new ideas. So it’s no wonder we had to partner with Princess Awesome for an upcoming design challenge for the Spoonflower community!

In this challenge, designers are asked to do exactly what Princess Awesome does – think about what’s missing from the girls’ section of clothing stores, and fill the gap with an awesome new pattern!
