This costume was made for my five year old son who has the following measurements:<\/p>\n<div>Height: 40&#8243;<\/div>\n<div>Hips: 23&#8243;<\/div>\n<div>Waist: 21&#8243;<\/div>\n<p><strong>Create the Fish Pattern\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1. Print out your free fish costume pattern and assemble. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you prefer a different look for your fish, use the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0poster board to design your own fish pattern. You can make any shape you would like but I stuck to a more bubbly rounded fish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31946 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-2.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2. If you&#8217;ve drawn your own fish pattern, cut it into separate parts so you have the following: head, body, tail and fin. These will be your pattern pieces for the fish. I added a tiny piece of poster board at the opening of the tail so it had a part to attach to the body later. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31947 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-3.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cut Out Your Fabric<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3. Fold your fabric so the right sides face out.\u00a0 Using your fabric pen, trace around the head and cut out. You should now have two fish head pieces in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spoonflower.com\/fabric\/5561740-teal-swiss-dot-by-binge_crafter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">head\/fin fabric<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31948 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-4.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4. Cut out two more head pieces with your batting. Take your two satin head pieces and face them right sides together. Place a layer of batting on the top and bottom so your head pieces are layered in the following way:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Batting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Satin <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Satin<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Batting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31949 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-5.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5. Pin around the head, leaving the longest edge unpinned, and stitch together with a 1\/2&#8243; seam allowance. Repeat so you have two stitched head pieces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">7. Next, it\u2019s time to make the fin. Repeat steps 3-5: Trace the fin, cut the fabric, cut the batting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31951 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-7.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8. Pin around the fin, excluding the large opening. This is the part you will attach to the fish. Repeat so you have two fin pieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">10. Next, fold your fabric in half and cut out two body pieces using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spoonflower.com\/fabric\/3458746-aqua-mermaid-tail-6-inch-scale-by-katebillingsley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fish body fabric<\/a>. This fabric is my favorite! Make sure you figure out which way you want your scales facing before you cut. Cut out two batting pieces as well using your fish body pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31955 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-11.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">13. Take all your pieces for one side of the fish (1 head, 1 body, 1 ) and l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ay them out so you know where you want the placement of the fin and face. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31971 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-12.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">14. Pin the face of the fish to the body. \u00a0Make sure to pin through both sides with the batting facing out. Stitch in place, making sure to only sew the front layer and front lining together and then repeat with the fish back and lining. This will ensure your fish is one piece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31976 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-pinning.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"580\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">15. Pin on the fin and sew the entire body making sure to leave an opening so you can insert the foam. F<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lip the body right side out.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Pro tip<\/strong><\/em>: Make sure to stitch around the fin,<em> not across<\/em>, to attach to the body. Cut out a foam sheet so it&#8217;s the same size or slightly smaller than the fish. \u00a0This does not need to look perfect, you just want it to fit nicely inside the fish.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31968 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-17-1.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">17. Roll the foam and insert it into the opening. Once inserted, open up the foam and fit it into the fish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31957 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-18.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">18. Take your glue gun and glue the opening shut or hand stitch closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">19. Repeat the above steps create the second fish body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">20. Cut out a tail fin from the foam and insert into the fin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em><strong>Pro tip<\/strong><\/em>: Cutting the foam in half makes it easier to insert into your fabric!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31958 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-19.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">21. Now it\u2019s time to attach the tail using your trusty glue gun.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Glue the tail between the two openings in the back of the fish. Glue around the tail as well so that the whole back part of the fish is glued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31959 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-20.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Make the Fish Eyes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">22. Take your white and black felt and cut out four white eyes and two black pupils. Glue two white eyes together and then attach a black pupil in the center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-31961 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.spoonflower.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Spoonflower-fish-costume-22.jpg\" alt=\"Handmade Halloween: A DIY Fish Costume That Won't Flop | Spoonflower Blog \" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">23. Glue the eyes onto the fish and glue the two heads together. Stop glueing before you reach the fish body fabric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">24. You should now you only have one opening &#8211; the middle of the fish. \u00a0This is where your child will get in and out of their costume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attach the Straps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">25. Measure the length of the straps by having your child put on the costume and see where the straps should lay so the costume fits comfortably.
