Is your little one a Picasso in the making? Celebrate their love for art this Halloween with a DIY project that requires just one yard of fabric! The only scary thing about this costume is how little space you’ll have left on your phone when you’re done capturing your budding artist in this soft Minky look. Follow along as Samarra Khaja, aka sammyk in the Marketplace, shows you how to recreate this one-yard wonder.
This summer, it’s total mermaid madness and we’re getting poolside ready with SammyK’s newest project: DIY mermaid tail beach blankets! It’s the perfect gift for your beach buddies and they’re sure to make a splash at your next pool party! To complete the look, we recommend choosing our super-soft Minky for the outer shell and your favorite toweling fabric for the lining. Dive in and see the full tutorial from our good friend Samarra Khaja…
Samarra: Calling All Mermaids and Mermen! I know you’ve been on the lookout for sparkling fresh options to expand on that tail repertoire of yours, so wait no longer fine-finned friends! [Read more…] about Make a Splash with this DIY Mermaid Tail Beach Blanket
Samarra Khaja, or SammyK as she’s known on Spoonflower, is not only a designer and community favorite, she’s also a talented pattern-maker (see this and this), has a much-loved class on Skillshare and consistently finds ways to inspire other designers and makers. Much of Samarra’s own inspiration is centered around New York City—in fact, if her two-story house grew legs and stood up, she’d be able to see the Empire State Building from her upstairs office. (She’s still waiting for it to do that.) Enjoy our candid chat with Samarra below!
My day starts with:
“Coffee, getting my kids ready to go to school, coming home to my studio and plotting what’s next on my never-ending to-do list. I also typically forget to eat when I should and always seem to hatch new creative brainwaves moments before I’m supposed to leave the house. Always!”
What happens when you combine Spoonflower’s Cotton Spandex Jersey, the brilliant mind of SammyK, and the winter cold and flu season? An adorable tissue-cozy swatch project, that’s what! Spoonflower friend and designer Samarra Khaja (SammyK) stops by the blog to bring you a swatch project that’s adorable, practical, and you can finish it up in just a few quick seams. Enjoy!
Our math-on-fabric contest was quite a hit. Sammyk‘s shapely calculations took home the most votes, and even has us cracking open our old geometry books. Head over to Spoonflower to check out the rest of our designer’s beautiful numbers.

See how fabric designer, artist, and mama extraordinaire Samarra Khaja (SammyK on Spoonflower) created this dino map headboard for her son out of our new Faux Suede fabric* and learn how to make a DIY headboard of your own!
SAMARRA: My eldest heads to 1st grade this fall. Call me all sentimental and whatnot, but I wanted to celebrate this first person to ever call me “Mama” by giving him something decorative that would also feed that cerebral sponge that is his thirsty brain. Fun and functional in one fell swoop. I decided upon a new headboard. It’s the perfect way to revamp the look and feel of a bedroom without sending one’s wallet off to weep quietly in the closet.
But this is not just any headboard, it’s a Dino Mapasaurus, my illustrated rendition of some of the places around the world that dinosaurs have been discovered (thus far <–wink, wink, lazy paleontologists of the world, let’s get crackin’!). My kids are pretty much dinosaur-obsessed, so this was the winning route to take.
Those of you who have followed the Spoonflower fabric-of-the-week contests for even a few months probably don't need an introduction to prolific designer Samarra Khaja, aka Sammyk. Samarra has a light-hearted design style coupled with a great sense of both humor and color, and she's won our contests multiple times. She's also gone pro recently, with two new fabric collections debuting with Timeless Treasures (and more in the works). Samarra graciously agreed to answer some questions about her new collections during this busy Thanksgiving week. Read on for more about her new work and a chance at a giveaway!
The winner of our fireworks fabric competition — informally known as the pyrotextile contest — is none other than all-time Spoonflower champ Samarra Khaja, or SammyK, who has won seven previous contests (civil rights toile, celebrity smackdown, tractors, medieval, tiki, cocktails, and science).
Samarra gets the prize, but we're also pleased to announce what we hope will be a welcome addition to the weekly contest. Each week from now on we'll make all of the top ten designs available for sale rather than just the winner. We'll also post photos of the printed fabrics in the top ten in our Flickr pool each week for you to admire.

The rumble in the humble has produced a new champ, none other than Samarra Khaja, the New York designer Spoonflowerers have come to know and love as SammyK. Her 'Elemental Classics', pictured above, won the most votes in a design contest in which the theme was the natural elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
We were very fortunate to have the participation of four other amazing individuals: Heather Ross, Lizzie House, Harmony Susalla and Cean Irminger. All of them have agreed to make their designs available for sale until December 31st with 20% of the proceeds to benefit a charity of the winner's choice. Samarra has selected Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary in New Mexico as the beneficiary. Please note that Harmony's design is not yet available for sale, as we are working on a feature that will allow her — and other designers — to limit the fabric choices on which their designs can be purchased. That new feature is almost ready, but didn't quite make the cut-off…
This week's contest was all about tractors! The design that garnered the most votes was 'A Bumpy Ride' by none other than Samarra Khaja, the talented New York illustrator who has won four — yes, four — previous Fabric Of the Week contests. With five wins under her belt (science, cocktail, tiki, and medieval in addition to this one) she reclaims her crown (belt buckle?) as Spoonflower's reigning texile design champion. Be sure to check out her fabric, as well as the rest of the top ten tractor fabrics..
Final voting results were:
