Updated December 3, 2020
To the Spoonflower community: Thank you. Your support has blown us away and reminded us just how much we can do when we get creative for the greater good. We are honored to announce that our partners will each receive a $6,902 donation toward the work they are doing within their organizations. In case you’re doing the math, with the help of the Spoonflower community, our Giving Tuesday contribution is $20,707.
This contribution will benefit Durham Free Lunch’s ability to offer no-cost meals for all Durham, North Carolina community members, Social Justice Sewing Academy’s youth education program that bridges artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice, and Raleigh City Farm’s Farmshare program that addresses food insecurity and access in Raleigh, North Carolina. We couldn’t have done it without you, and this is just one more reminder of what happens when we can come together, even if it is just virtual (for now).
2020 has been a difficult year to say the least. For non-profit organizations all over the world, it’s been an especially challenging year and we’ve been in awe of the work they have been doing to continually make a positive impact on their (and our) communities. From taking fundraisers online to pivoting vital community programming, the leaders of these organizations have been working hard behind the scenes and now it’s our chance to give back and say thank you. In celebration of Giving Tuesday—a global generosity movement—Spoonflower is donating 10% of all sales on Tuesday, December 1, to three charities making a change for good within our community.
Meet Our Giving Tuesday Partners
Social Justice Sewing Academy
The Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a national organization that aims to bridge artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of programs from youth-based workshops to remembrance quilts honoring the lives of those lost to violence, SJSA empowers individuals to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion on their journey to becoming agents of social change.
Your support of SJSA helps fund the virtual workshops that SJSA has begun to facilitate. Funds received from today’s donations assist in paying for the fabric, the long-arm quilter who puts the final touches on the quilt as well as shipping costs associated with these workshops. Spoonflower is a proud sponsor of Social Justice Sewing Academy’s Business Incubator, a 6-month virtual program aimed at developing and supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Durham Neighbors Initiative: Durham Free Lunch
Located just minutes from the Spoonflower HQ, the Durham Free Lunch Initiative was formed as a response to the Covid-19 Crisis. Their goal is to provide a healthy, accessible meal for anyone who is food insecure: Durham Public Schools students, our unhoused/housing-insecure population, and workers who have been laid off due to COVID-19. They serve a thousand lunches per week, no hassle, no questions asked.
Your support of Durham Free Lunch provides the DFL team the ability to purchase ingredients and pay their staff to prepare meals to hand out. Through generous donations including Giving Tuesday support, DFL’s restaurant partner, Geer St. Garden, has been able to avoid laying off staff during the pandemic, keeping money flowing through the local food system by way of Durham Free Lunch purchases, and most importantly, the program has been able to provide no-cost meals for anyone who needs them.
Raleigh City Farm
Raleigh City Farm strives to grow the next generation of farmers by connecting our community to sustainable agriculture.
Your support of Raleigh City Farm, a Raleigh, North Carolina-based urban farm, will help underwrite their Farmshare program that donates produce to nonprofits addressing food insecurity and access including A Place the the Table, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle/Logan’s Plant-a-Row for the Hungry, the Marcus Harris Foundation’s Neighborfood Express program and the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC’s Middle Mile program. Spoonflower is proud to support RCF’s annual Harvest Dinner.
