10 years ago, Kim Fraser had her heart set on making a set of yellow oversized polka dot curtains for her living room. When the oversized polka dot fabric was nowhere to be found, she took matters into her own hands. With the help of her husband, Stephen Fraser, and his colleague Gart Davis, the three set out to create a custom printing fabric company for a growing maker and designer community, and to finally get those darn polka dots! Launching in Mebane*, North Carolina, this ambitious team of three began hiring like-minded individuals and, now 10 years later, the business has grown into an international team of 165 creative employees.
It’s hard to believe it’s been close to two years since our last update from the Berlin team. We’ve been hard at work completing the space, growing the team, expanding marketing efforts and internationalizing pages on the site!
Our Berlin team now consists of 30 crafty individuals from 20 different countries. From New Zealand to South Korea, and South Africa to Bulgaria, we have rounded up quite a diverse group of folks who help with everything from printing orders to writing code. Members of the Berlin team speak 23 languages and while we come from various corners of the globe we all unite around the common goal of craftiness and creativity! One year ago we might not have been able to provide the answer but thankfully, we now know you’ll get three unbelievably inspiring days at Camp Wed.
Here at Spoonflower we love a good handmade fair and Kirstie Allsopp’s The Handmade Fair was one for the books. Together with over 15,000 makers we filled the Green at Hampton Court Palace just south of London with bunting, fabric and handmade goodness galore! Here’s a look into our weekend of making from Berlin team member Allie.

We love connecting with our design community in emails for our Meet the Designer series and a highlight of our day is seeing what you’re making with #spoonflower on our favorite social channels. However, it’s not often we get the chance to meet with our design community in person. So, when the opportunity came our way to meet some of our fabulous designers and chat about all of the new things we have been up to help grow their earnings with us (like new distribution strategies with Etsy and Ebay), we knew we couldn’t miss the chance! Follow along as Spoonflower’s President, Allison Sloan Polish, and Etsy Channel Manager + Designer Advocate, Tara ( aka Tarareed ), recap their trip to the 2017 Surtex show and say hello to the designer friends they met along the way!
It’s no coincidence the word mom spells wow when flipped upside down. From carpooling to crust cutting and lending an ear to lending a hand, moms ( and mother-like figures) wow us in so many different ways. Some moms show their unconditional love through creativity, while others go a more tangible route : endless amounts of hugs, kisses, and embarrassment! Luckily for the Spoonflower team, we have an office and factory full of talented, hard-working moms who show their love for not only their family at home, but their family in the office! Keep reading to learn more about five of these mama bears.
Spoonflower is revolutionizing the way you replenish your fabric stash! Choose from basic yard templates (half yards horizontal or vertical) or project templates (cheater quilts and infinity scarves) and select the designs you want printed. With multiple designs filling a yard, you can now get the fabric you want in just the amounts you need. Check out some of our fave projects below, and learn how to use this exciting new technology:
With our new Fill-A-ProjectTM cheater quilt templates, you can complete an heirloom-quality large quilt in record time. Up your quilt game with custom fabric you designed yourself or find those just-right designs in our Marketplace.
Each Fill-A-ProjectTM is offered in a limited selection of fabric types. For our cheater quilt tops, you can choose from Basic Combed Cotton, Kona Cotton and Cotton Poplin. Don’t forget to choose yardage for the backing! The quilters among us love Organic Cotton Sateen Ultra ($27/yd), Kona ® Cotton Ultra ($19/yd), Cotton Poplin Ultra ($20/yd), Satin ($18/yd) and Minky ($27/yd) for a soft and colorful touch.
Create two scarves with just two yards! This is one of our favorite beginner sewing projects. Once you order your infinity scarf fabric, check out our favorite infinity scarf tutorial to learn how to easily put it together with just a few seams. Use Poly Crepe de Chine to create a lightweight, sheer scarf, or use Modern Jersey or Cotton Spandex Ultra to create a soft, stretchy scarf.
There will be zero upcharge for templates and the commission structure will mirror Sprout Patterns as a percentage of the yard! Templates follow current pricing by substrate. Currently, you will also earn commissions on Fill-A-Yard projects you order for yourself using your own designs — this is in lieu of the 10% designer discount on regular fabric purchases. This ‘commission’ will show up in your account as spendable Spoondollars, but will not be included on any total earnings for tax purposes.
There are two great reasons to build Collections now. First, in order to fill a template with multiple designs, the designs must all be within the same collection — which can now include designs from any designer in the marketplace! Second, shoppers love groups of designs curated around themes or colorways for their projects. Designers — make sure to add titles and descriptions to your Collections with theme keywords and colors so that others can find them easily when searching for those perfect pairings. Start creating and have fun!
