There’s something magical about flowers blooming in a dry desolate desert. This past week we asked designers to capture that magic in a design inspired by the cactus flower. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites from the #July2016Cactus Weekly Prompt submissions below, check them all out here!
This month we celebrate the back-to-school season with our friends at Plum Print. Plum Print is the easy, super smart way to turn the piles and piles of artwork your children create (and perhaps you too!) into custom coffee-table books, digital archives, home décor and other gifts. This month, we’re partnering up to offer you great prizes for your fabulous weekly designs!
How it works: To participate, you’ll simply upload your design to Spoonflower, make it “public” and add in that week’s specific tag. Each week will have its own special tag, which is how participating designs will be found on Spoonflower.
Week One: Floral Dinosaurs
In order for creativity and artistic skill to thrive, it needs to become a habit. With that in mind, we launched our brand new #SFWeeklyDesign series. We give you the prompts, and you take it from there, posting your creations on social media using the hashtag #SFWeeklyDesign. Week one’s prompt was “Floral Dinosaurs,” and the results did not disappoint! Our designer community came together to create some pretty spectacular dinos. We were quite amazed! We’ve rounded up a few of our favorites below, and you can see even more here on our special Pinterest board.
May 30 – June 5: Cats + Donuts
(!!) In celebration of National Donut Day (June 3rd) and National Hug Your Cat Day (June 5th) why not put them together for an epic surface design? Sprinkles, jelly-filled, bacon-topped, calico, siamese, hairless. Will your cats be eating the donuts? Wearing them? Riding them through space? We cannot wait to find out.
June 6 – June 12 : Figs
From fiddle figs to brown turkey figs and purple genca, figs have been trending hard lately and we can’t get enough. Figs are currently in season where we live in the southern USA, so why not celebrate this delicious summer jewel with a fresh, lovely design featuring the almighty fig!
June 13 – 19: Ditsy Seahorses
Father’s Day is June 19th, and seahorses happen to be pretty awesome dads! The males don’t just play a role in pregnancy, but actually get pregnant. Females deposit their eggs in the male’s pouch, where he fertilizes and carries them until tiny baby seahorses emerge fully developed. Pretty amazing creatures if you ask us. Hat’s off to the best dads under the sea!
June 20 – June 26 Gemini Vs. Cancer
Twins versus crabs, who will win the battle of the best June astrological symbol?
We’re bringing our beloved Weekly Design Challenge back, but with a twist! If you live and breathe surface design, then we know that just one challenge per month isn’t enough for you. That’s why we’re now going to be giving you a new prompt each week to get your creative juices flowing. Not a fan of a certain week’s prompt? We’ll have new themes outlined throughout the end of the month so there’s always a selection to choose from. Participate in whichever ones speak to you!
How it works: To “enter,” all you have to do is upload your design on social media with the hashtag #SFWeeklyDesign during the week of the theme you’ve chosen. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flickr all count as social media.
Will there be voting? There will not be traditional voting happening on our site, but designs with the most likes and comments will be featured by us on our blog and social channels.
Will there be prizes? At the end of each month, participants who use the hashtag #SFWeeklyDesign will be randomly chosen to receive prizes. Prizes could range from free design books and tools, Creative Cloud subscriptions, Spoonflower credit (or credit for one of our sister brands, Sprout Patterns and Roostery) to free fabric, etc!
Do I need to upload my design to Spoonflower? The purpose of the Weekly Prompts is to keep our community inspired and challenged. To participate, it’s not required to upload your design to Spoonflower, but strongly encouraged so you can start earning commissions if it sells!
Is this related at all to the official Monthly Design Challenges? Nope! This is just a little something extra because why not?
Where do I find the weekly prompts? You’ll always be able to find the weekly prompts on our blog in the upper right corner or by going here.
How do you choose the themes? Themes are chosen by seasonality, but also by what’s trending and what’s frequently being searched for on our site. By designing around trending topics, your designs will be more likely to succeed in the Marketplace.
May 9 – 15: Floral Dinosaurs
Sometimes two things that don’t usually go together just seem to go together so well…
May 16 – 22: Migratory Birds
Celebrate the incredible journey that migratory birds take each year! They travel thousands of miles between breeding grounds in North America, and their winter homes in Central and South America. Heading outside for a hike to admire birds in their natural habitat is not required but strongly encouraged.
May 23 – 29: Limited Color Palette Hawaiian Shirt
Because who doesn’t love a good Hawaiian shirt to welcome the official start of grilling season in the Northern Hemisphere? Please use each color in its full opacity. Black and White are permitted, but you must use at least three colors from the color palette as well.
