Imagine if every time you searched for an answer, you didn’t find what you were looking for. For those affected by a rare disease, this is an every day reality. On Tuesday, February 28, people all over the world are raising awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives during Rare Disease Day.
Crafting For A Cause
Last year, the Spoonflower community came together for the first ever International RARE Bear Sew-in supporting RARE Science, and you blew us away with your generosity! We are excited to announce that on March 18th, Spoonflower will be hosting our 2nd annual International RARE Bear sew-in for the one-of-a-kind children supported by RARE Science. It’s time to spring into action for kids!
Over the years, we’ve learned so many things about our creative community but one thing that has really stood out is the way this community comes together in the wake of tragedy. After the Boston Marathon bombings, the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild organized To Boston With Love, an installation of peace and love flags to be displayed at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. After the Nepal earthquake in 2015, Spoonflower employees got together and created Blankets for Good, a quarterly employee sew-in supporting those in need.
As we begin to approach the busy holiday season, there is one standing tradition at Spoonflower that allows us to embrace the best qualities of the holiday season – kindness and giving. For the 5th year in a row, we are excited to announce that both Spoonflower locations (that’s right… our US and Berlin offices!) will be donation drop-off locations for the Softies for Mirabel Drive, hosted by Pip Lincolne over at Meet Me at Mike’s.
Spoonflower is excited to announce a special limited edition item: adorable corgi pillows. Made from Spoonflower’s Eco Canvas, these cute pillows starred in our tribute to Queen Elizabeth II to mark Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.
For every sustainably produced pillow sold, Spoonflower will donate $12 to The Coalition to Unchain Dogs. Help fight against animal abuse while cuddling up with a corgi pillow. [Read more…] about We Need Your Help to Spay, Neuter & Unchain Dogs
Have you ever been told a story about a group of people doing good for others and were so moved that you were inspired to get out there and make a difference too? For Lynne Goldsworthy, this was the case when she learned about Siblings Together, a UK based charity that promotes positive contact between brothers and sisters separated in foster care, kinship care, residential care, or adoption. When Spoonflower learns about organizations or groups of people who are donating their sewing and crafting skills for a greater cause, we always want to know more! So we sat down with Lynne to find out her story and how Spoonflower could contribute.
In April of 2015, a devastating earthquake hit Nepal and left many homeless. Across the world in Durham, NC, Spoonflower’s own Anitha Kothandaraman wanted to do something to help. Anitha came up with the idea that the employees of Spoonflower could use its resources of remnant fabric and energetic, creative employees to sew blankets for Nepal. Just like that, Spoonflower’s Blankets for Good program was born.
Meredith, Spoonflower’s Community Outreach organizer, sews a RARE Bear to be given to a child living with a rare disease.
This past Saturday, over 30 community members and Spoonflower employees spent the afternoon sewing RARE Bears for one-of-a-kind kids supported by RARE Science Inc., a non-profit research organization accelerating cures for rare childhood diseases. On this very special afternoon, quilt guilds, sewing groups, and crafty individuals stitched up bears all over the country to Spring into Action. From California to here in Durham, North Carolina, it was RARE Bear mania!
