Welcome to our 4th annual Doodle-a-Day Challenge, a partnership with our good friend (and Spoonflower artist) Rhianna Wurman of ellolovey! This is a challenge for everyone—professional artists, kids, aspirational drawers, occasional doodlers or anyone else who would like to tackle a fun daily project to start off 2023.
The creative community of Spoonflower artists, makers and interior designers helped inspire this year’s theme of “making.” We can’t wait to see how you interpret prompts like “tools of the trade,” “embroidery” and even “a mess!” Read on below to see 1) daily challenge prompts on this year’s theme, 2) a link to our design tutorials, 3) how to participate as well as 4) what you could win for taking part.
What is the Doodle-A-Day Challenge?
The Doodle-A-Day challenge is a monthlong challenge for artists and doodlers alike to draw one doodle every day in January. Rhianna Wurman and Spoonflower have come up with a prompt for each day in January 2023 related to the theme of making.
This challenge was first created by Rhianna, and since 2019, we’ve partnered with her to share this with our community. If you’d like to learn more about Rhianna, click here to read her Meet the Artist interview!
What Do I Need to Participate?
For this challenge you can go analog, with tools like paper and pens, or you can go digital and doodle on your phone, computer or tablet.
If you’d like to see our wide array of design resources, please click on the button below. For starters, you can also check out Rhianna’s very own Beginner’s Guide to Procreate blog post.

Doodle-a-Day Rules and How to Participate
⦿ Use the prompt list above for your daily doodling inspiration.
⦿ Share your doodles on Instagram and post them with the hashtag #DoodleADayJanELSF. Don’t forget to tag @spoonflower and @ellolovey so we can all see and encourage everyone’s work—and so you can be eligible to win our grand prize!
⦿ You don’t need to participate every day to be eligible for the grand prize, but the more prompts you post, the more chances to win. Feel free to jump in whenever you like and do as many prompts as you can or even just a few of them.
⦿ This is a fun exercise to work the right side of the brain, so we encourage you to enjoy yourself and get creative!

About the Author:
I looked on the Insta page and didn’t see any monthly guides after February. Where would I find March and April and the upcoming months as they’re published? I’d like to do this as an exercise rather than for the prizes (although they’re lovely) as I need to push myself to be more creative daily. Thanks.
Hi Gayle!
You can find monthly prompts over on Rhianna’s Instagram profile here: https://www.instagram.com/ellolovey/
Happy doodling!

Betsy

Too bad it’s only on Instagram. The last thing I need is another social media account. 🙁
Yep, Kymberlee, social media accounts can be a lot to wrangle!
I know it’s a bummer you won’t be able to win by not being on Instagram, but that doesn’t mean you can’t participate on your own if you’d like, or follow along with the entries of others by checking them out here (under Most Recent): https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/doodleadayjanelsf/

I would like to join but for the inexperienced computer user like myself can you explain more about how to hashtag for this challenge so to post our work??
Hi Diane!
Hashtags allow photos to show up in dedicated groups depending on what the hashtag is. Therefore, for this post, you’ll need to add the following text somewhere in your caption, you can even copy it from this comment and then paste it into your caption: #doodleadayjanelsf
Frequently hashtags are added to the end of image captions, but you can add it to the text and it will work as well.
Remember! To be eligible to win the grand prize, you’ll also need to tag @ellolovey and @spoonflower in your post too! (In case you’re unsure how to tag people, you can tag both of those accounts by copying the following and pasting it into your caption along with your caption and the hashtag: @ellolovey @spoonflower
Good luck!
Betsy
