Spoonflower Ambassador Mathew Boudreaux shares their personalized “Be Proud” wall hanging for Pride Month in this no-sew tutorial. Use Mathew’s design and template as shown in this post or create your own project by following the steps they share below. This is a project for makers who want to try customizing wall hangings, combining die cut templates with home decor or creating something meaningful by hand. (Note: This post mentions Petal Signature Solids, which we sunset in June 2023. However, your projects will work perfectly with Petal Signature Cotton—it’s the exact same fabric and can be printed with any Spoonflower Marketplace design!)

Mathew: I’m not gonna lie. There are moments when I find it hard to be proud.

The rhetoric, hate and willful ignorance is the worst I’ve witnessed in a long time. But these moments only last for like a couple minutes and I’m quickly reminded that the LGBTQ+ community is one full of magical unicorns that have every right to BE PROUD.

So in order to remind myself (and anyone else who sees this), I ordered a wall hanging of my United States of Potential design and personalized it using Spoonflower’s Petal Signature Cotton® Solids fabric.

Skill level: Beginner

Materials

  • Wall hanging of my United States of Potential design
  • 12” x 12” (30.48 cm x 30.48.cm) of Petal Signature Cotton® Solid fabric in Graphite
  • HeatnBond UltraHold Iron-On Adhesive
  • Die cutting machine or scissors
  • Template for die cutting machine (template link) or printer (mirrored template link)
  • Water (to stay hydrated, of course)

Material Preparation

Step 1. Fuse the iron-on adhesive to the 12” x 12” (30.48 cm x 30.48.cm) of the Petal Signature Cotton in Graphite

Step 2. Using the template (see links in materials list above), cut out the design either with:

  • A die cut machine
  • Scissors (after a) using a printer to print out the template then b) affixing the template to the paper side of the adhesive)

An image of a printed-out template with a die cut machine on white adhesive. The text on the template says bold black font “No matter where be PROUD.” All of the words are in cursive title case, except for the word “Proud” which is in all caps.

Step 3. Iron your wall hanging before affixing the design to it.

Adding the Design

Step 4. Once all of the design is cut out, remove the paper from the back on all pieces.

A close up of a turquoise fabric wall hanging with a map of the United States on it, where each state is in a different color, making the country into a rainbow, hangs up against a wall. In bold black font, are the words “No matter where be” with the tops of the word “PROUD” showing. All of the words are in cursive title case, except for the word “Proud” which is in all caps. Several removed sections of the template have been placed on the map to highlight that this step includes taking away parts of the template to reveal the words within

Step 5. Arrange the cut-out pieces on the wall hanging to your liking, then press the pieces in place on the wall hanging using the specifications listed in the adhesive.

A close of up ironing the wall hanging with the words affixed. “Be” and the “ROU” of “PROUD” are shown against a turquoise background, as well as the top point of an iron.

Step 7. Flip the wall hanging over and iron it from the back until the pieces are fully affixed.

Finishing Up

Step 8. Starting at the bottom, place the front piece of the beech wood wall hanging with the magnets toward the top.

The back of the wall hanging is shown with the words “Be Proud” visible through the wall hanging and in reverse. Mathew holds the bottom right and left sides of the wall hanging taut. The lower wooden piece of the wall hanging lays on the table slightly underneath the fabric.

Step 9. Add the back piece to secure the magnets.

The back of the wall hanging is shown with the words “Be Proud” visible through the wall hanging and in reverse. Mathew is attaching the lower wooden piece of the wall hanging to the fabric so that it hangs taut.

Step 10. Follow the same process for the top fabric edge, then hang it up somewhere cute.

A wall hanging with a turquoise background and a map of the United States, where each state is in a different color, making the country into one large rainbow gradient, hangs against a wall. In bold black font, the wall hanging also says “No matter where be PROUD.” All of the words are in cursive title case, except for the word “Proud” which is in all caps. The wall hanging has a piece of wood at both the top and bottom to ensure it hangs taut.

And just like that, voila, your wall hanging is done! You don’t need to limit your creativity to the template that I provided here. You are welcome to make this your own if you’d prefer to do so.

But, no matter what, be proud. Because you are loved. You are perfect. You are valid. Happy Pride.
