English:

The cultural diversity of the Spoonflower Marketplace is what makes this community so special. This month, we’re honored to introduce you to 12 Latin American artists who were kind enough to share how their heritage informs their artistic expression.

Editor’s note: After reflecting on feedback we’ve received from our community, it’s become clear to us that one single term simply isn’t enough to encompass all of the vibrant, geographically diverse individuals that this month seeks to honor. Words matter.

In order to use words that most authentically represent the communities we hope to spotlight this month, we’ll be primarily using the term “Hispanic Heritage Month” in our language, in addition to “Latinx” and “Latin American.”

Spoonflower is proud to celebrate the cultures, contributions and artistry of the Hispanic and Latin American artists in our community. We hope to introduce you to someone new whose designs you’ll love, and we encourage you to support these talented folks during Hispanic Heritage Month and all year long.

English: “What I love about Mexico is the huge diversity of ecosystems we have. Walking in the wild just looking at all the beauty in nature is one of my favorite moments in life. I’ve visited incredible places in my country that inspire me. Although I enjoy exploring very different design styles, I think my work is mostly influenced by colorful palettes, organic shapes and textures.”

English: “I am part of a country with a very diverse and powerful nature. From the exuberant tropical jungles to the snowy cold of the south, the Andes and its vineyards, the valley of the pampas, the aridity of the north, everything mixes and merges, forming original colors and textures. This diversity is part of my inspiration and my work. Also, as I was born in Buenos Aires, I have a romantic and nostalgic character, typical of tango music, and that also influences my design style. Lastly, I am very proud to be Latin American, especially in the spirit of struggle for social causes and the pursuit of a fair and just world. All that heritage is very present in my life, and of course in my work.”

English: “I grew up in Buenos Aires, a very European city, with influences from all over the world. This is the city of tango, football and polo. On holidays we went to the countryside, where we lived as “gauchos” and ride on horseback all day long. My mother was born in Peru so I had many Andean textiles, and ornaments at home, which was full of bright colors. . Today I live in the suburbs, very near the River Plate. My house, and my art, is a reflection of this influences, the measured European, mínimalistic plain pampas and the details of bright colors and patterns, on floors, walls and textiles.”

English: “Rural Colombia is full of magical and diverse natural scenes, there are bold and contrasting colors everywhere. From an overly loud rooster with dark blue and ochre feathers that wakes me up most mornings to an exotic blue and turquoise bird, perched on a lush green tree full of tiny magenta fruits or a swirling pink, peach and silver sunset; these are some images I get to see when I look out my window. Every day I am in awe of the natural beauty the tropical Andes have to offer. My country is my main and constant source of inspiration.”

English: “I’m from Lima, Peru, the City of Kings. It was the center of the Spanish colony on the Americas, and as such was, and is, a melting pot of cultures and races, that includes the native Incas, the Spaniards, the African slaves and later the Chinese immigrants. So my cultural influences came from a fusion of rich mythology, awesome food, the ever-present Pacific ocean with its fantastic life and mysteries, and the bustling and chaotic modern city life. Some of these elements are clearly depicted in my patterns, others are more subtle.”

English: “I grew up surrounded by the beautiful nature that we have, from amazing deserts, astonishing mountains, beautiful forest, lakes and a lot, a lot of sea. This nature and the great variety of gorgeous animals who inhabit it, are my eternal inspiration. In my garden I planted many Chilean wildflowers that I love and put up a lot of birdhouses, so that the birds can come and ‘rent’ them. My bedroom window looks directly at these houses and I love it. In my work, you could always find flowers, animals or birds… or my dog Gus.”

English: “Uruguay has a rich heritage through the crucible of cultures most of them coming from European immigrants and African slaves. I grew up listening to Uruguayan folk music, tango in my grannies house, but also rock and roll and reading classic tales, creole traditional stories as well as American and French characters’ comics. The mixture and assimilation of other cultures are part of Uruguayan DNA. I like to vary, experiment, try different techniques and forms of expression and in my designs, I often include elements of the flora and fauna of this region.”
