Named one of CNBC “hottest toys for the holidays”, the Nugget four-piece portable kids couch by Nugget is the toy-furniture hybrid that parents are calling the best kid item they have ever purchased for their kids. Made of open-cell foam (covered by a soft, washable microsuede fabric), this one-of-a-kind couch is designed to withstand whatever kids can throw at it.
It turns out the world’s best kids toy is actually a couch.
With just four pieces, the Nugget play couch is super simple, and that’s what makes it special. No bells and whistles, just four foam building blocks for the most creative people on Earth: kids.
Spoonflower is thrilled to partner with the North Carolina-based company (just 20 minutes from Spoonflower HQ!) during March for the Nugget Couch Design Challenge. For this special design challenge, the Nugget team is asking the talented Spoonflower designer community to join in their design planning of a special limited-edition patterned Nugget coming later this year. Keep reading to get to know more about who the Nugget customer is and your prompt for this upcoming challenge.
Get to know the Nugget customer.
Nugget customers are mostly families with Nuggeteers (kiddos) ages 2-12. They are looking for a design that energizes their kid’s imaginations and creativity, while also fitting nicely into the context of all rooms of the home. (Nuggeteers tend to drag their Nuggets all over the house!) Nugget families are also looking for a design that all of the siblings can agree on for many more years to come.
Nugget Couch Design Challenge | Entries due by March 17
What’s bright, bold and fun all over? A Nugget couch featuring the winning design in this week’s challenge, of course! Nugget is a modular, infinitely configurable play couch for little ones, and their team is looking for a repeating non-directional pattern featuring bright, color-blocked shapes to turn into a limited edition Spoonflower x Nugget couch. Just like the kiddos who create forts or reading nooks with their couch, your geometric design should fit nicely into multiple room styles alongside growing imaginations.
The winning design, handpicked by Nugget from the popularly voted top 50, will receive a $500 cash prize and be featured on a Nugget Couch coming later this year!
Entries will be previewed on a fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close March 17 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins March 19. Winners will be announced March 26. See official rules.
Three important notes about your Nugget Design Challenge Entry:
The winning design will be limited to no more than eight colors during Nugget production so please limit your entry to no more than eight colors. Due to the cut-and-sew nature of Nugget manufacturing, your design challenge entry should be non-directional.
*The Nugget team will work directly with the winning designer to get their design ready for Nugget’s printing process and to determine a licensing agreement. The winning design cannot be sold outside of Spoonflower, Roostery and Nugget.
Grand Prize
One grand prize winner will receive a $500 cash prize from Nugget Comfort, which will also serve as the licensing fee* to be featured on a Nugget Couch coming late 2020. Winner will also receive a Nugget couch featuring their winning design ($249 value), $200 in Spoonflower credit, along with additional exposure in Spoonflower and Nugget email newsletters, professional photography of products featuring their design, and social media mentions, the extent of which shall be in the Sponsors’ discretion.
Please note:
*Nugget will work directly with the designer to determine a licensing agreement but please note, the winning design cannot be sold outside of Spoonflower, Roostery and Nugget.
Second Place
The 2nd place winner will receive $100 in Spoonflower credit and $229 Nugget Gift Card.
Third Place
The 3rd place winner will receive $50 in Spoonflower credit and $50 Nugget Gift Card.
The rest of the top 10
4th through 10th place winners will receive a $20 Spoondollar credit.
All of the top 50
Each of the top 50 entries, determined as set forth above, not receiving one of the foregoing prizes will be automatically proofed for sale in the Spoonflower Marketplace (approximately a $5 value) (the “Runner Up Prize”) if winners are verified sellers.
Hi! If black is used as an outline for shapes, does that count as one of the 8 colors? Or can that be in addition to 8 colors?
Thank you!
Hi Jenny,
Great question. You may include black as an additional color. It may be helpful to note that the color limit is to ensure your design does not change dramatically from the entry period on Spoonflower to the time it is printed through Nugget’s manufacturing process. I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!
Thank you! One more– should our design be smaller than the 21×18 size that you will be using, so that it is repeating on the 21×18? (i.e. the single design should NOT be the actual 21×18 size)?
Hi Jenny,
That is really up to you! A lot of designers will choose to create their design at a scale so that the design repeats at least once across the voting preview fat quarter. Please keep in mind the designer will be working directly with the Nugget team to make any necessary scale changes. I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!
Hi there,
is there a limit as to how many designs each designer is allowed to submit?
Thanks!
Nevermind, I found the answer.
Hi Miriam,
One entry per person, please!
Hi Spoonflower! Does the 8 colour limit include white or can you have 8 colors and white?
Hi Kylie,
Great question! You may include white as an additional color. It may be helpful to note that the color limit is to ensure your design does not change dramatically from the entry period on Spoonflower to the time it is printed through Nugget’s manufacturing process. I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!
Thanks Meredith!
