Materials

  • 1 Petal Signature Cotton fat quarter featuring Bunny Bag Cut-and-Sew Project
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric scissors and/or rotary cutter and mat
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Coordinating thread
  • Two 18″ lengths of 1/8″ ribbon or thin cording for drawstrings
  • 1 pom pom, 1-2″ size, store-bought or handmade
  • Glue gun or tacky white glue
  • Iron and pressing cloth or ironing board
  • And most importantly, Easter treats to fill the bags!
  • Gift tag (optional)

Step 1: Cut out your pattern pieces.

Cut out all of the project pieces from your fat quarter of fabric along the edges of each shape: Front, Back, Lining, and Ears. I’ve also included optional gift tags that you can sew to the bottom of the bag after writing your Easter message with a washable pen.

Pro Tip:

All seam allowances are 1/4″

Step 2: Assemble the Bunny Ears

Place one Ear Outside piece and one Ear Inside piece right sides together aligning all raw edges and stitch, leaving bottom straight edge open. Trim the seam and clip the curves, then turn right side out and press. Repeat for the second ear.

Step 3: Assemble the back of the bag’s body.

Fold the Outer Back (floral) panel in half to find the center. Then place each ear on either side of the center mark, with the inside ear (pink) side facing up and open raw edges aligned with top of the panel.

Place one lining piece (egg) right sides together with ears/outer back panel and stitch across through all layers.

Step 4: Press the seams open

Press seam open, with ears facing towards the outside (floral) panel. Set this piece aside as we work on the front of the bag’s body next.

Step 5: Assemble the Front of the bag’s body

Align the top raw edges of the Front panel (Bunny face) and remaining lining (egg) piece and stitch. Press the seam open.

Step 6: Prepare your bag pieces to be stitched together

Place both panels you just made right sides together, aligning seams and matching the lining pieces together and the front and back pieces together. On the outside front/back only, on both sides, measure and mark 1/2″ from the center seam, and then 1-1/4″ from the center seam. This will become the drawstring casing openings.

Along the bottom edge of lining pieces only, measure and mark 2″ in from each outer edge. This will be the opening you will turn the bag right sides out through.

Step 7: Stitch your bag body pieces together—keeping marked openings unstitched.

Taking care to not stitch over the ear pieces, stitch around the edge of your bag, making sure to not stitch over any of the openings you marked in step 6.

Press the seam open to make the drawstring insertion much easier!

Step 8: Box the corners of the bag

On one corner of the bag, open and arrange the fabric to box the corner. Measure and mark a line at 1″, taking care to align seams together, then stitch along the line and trim the excess fabric/corner seam to 1/4″. Take care to not catch the ear pieces in the seams. Repeat on the remaining three corners.

Step 9: Turn the bag right side out

Turn the bag out through the 2″ opening in the lining. Sew the opening closed by hand or machine. Turn the lining to the inside of the bag and smooth out so the top edge seam is neat, and press.

Step 10: Create the drawstring casing

Measure and mark a 1/2″ line from top edge of the bag, all the way around, using a disappearing fabric pen or Hera marker (or you can use the seam allowance markings on your machine). Make a second mark and line at 1″ from the top of the bag, all the way around. Starting at one side seam, stitch all the way around at the 1/2″ marking you made, to where you started and backstitch. Next, sew a second line of stitching all the way around along the 1″ marking.

Step 11: Insert the drawstrings

With a small safety pin, thread one length of ribbon through one of the casing openings at the side seam all the way around and back out the same opening. Tie the ends together. Repeat on the opposite side casing opening of the bag.
