Were you one of those kids who tried to wiggle a loose tooth just to have a chance to see what the tooth fairy would bring you under your pillow? With just a little bit of time and less than $20 in supplies, you can sew up a cute tooth fairy pillow for the little ones in your life!
What’s a tooth fairy pillow, you ask? This beginner-friendly cut-and-sew pillow project designed by Sarah Knight includes a mini tooth-shaped pocket on the front, so your child can store their tooth until the tooth fairy makes a visit during the night to swap it out for a fun surprise. The cut-and-sew project requires just a fat quarter of Minky and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. See the full video tutorial below or jump ahead to the written instructions.
*Pro tip: Be sure to order your cut-and-sew project on a fat quarter of fabric that is at least 27″ wide!
Step 1. Cut out the front and back pillow pieces and the tooth pocket from your fat quarter.
Pro tip: Cut out the extra mouse in the top left corner and stitch it onto a pair of pajamas!
Step 2. Pin the tooth pocket to the front of the pillow, lining up the tooth on the pillow front with the tooth you cut out.
Step 3. Topstitch the tooth pocket to the front pillow piece, making sure to leave the top portion unstitched to create a pocket.
Note: Since Minky is a knit fabric, the unhemmed fabric at the top of the tooth won’t fray!
Step 4. With right sides facing, pin together the front and back pillow pieces.
Step 5. Stitch all four sides with a 1/2-5/8″ seam allowance, making sure to leave a 2-3″ opening on one side. Trim the seam allowance and clip the curves.
Step 6. Turn the pillow right side out and push out the corners with a point turner.
Step 7. Fill the pillow with fiberfill to your preferred firmness. Secure the 2-3″ opening with a ladder stitch.
Pro tip: Reduce, reuse, recycle! If you don’t have any filling on hand, stuff your pillow with fabric scraps!
And there you have it. In just 30 minutes, you’ve got an adorable pillow to store your little one’s tooth as they anxiously await the arrival of the tooth fairy! Take your project to the next level using Sarah’s repeating tooth fairy patterns and our free leggings pattern (available up to 5T).
