Announcing November’s Design Challenge Themes

OCT 5, 2018

Spoonflower’s Weekly Design Challenges encourage creativity by inviting our community to submit designs around a theme and vote on favorites to win weekly prizes. See what design challenges are coming up and which designers were crowned grand-champion in past challenges here. Who knows… maybe you’ll find yourself in the winner’s seat in November!

Fair Isle | Entries due by November 6

If you can’t get enough of the hygge lifestyle, we think you’re going to love cuddling up to this week’s challenge! The traditional style of Fair Isle knitting can be easily spotted thanks to iconic design elements such as bands of patterns in simplified geometric shapes, small repeating motifs, and a palette of multiple colors. When designing your entry, think about what the Spoonflower community could make with your design, and get creative with color. From Christmas stockings to winter lounge pants to gift wrap, your design should reflect the cozy feeling this knitting technique is known for.

Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close November 6 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins November 8. Winners will be announced  November 15. See official rules.

Holidays Around the World | Entries due by November 13

‘Tis the season for family traditions! The Spoonflower community is a melting pot of designers and makers from all walks of life and in this week’s challenge, we want to see how you celebrate the season in your corner of the world. Whether it’s lighting luminaires every Christmas Eve, playing dreidel on the first night of Hanukkah or going for a polar bear swim on New Year’s Day, create a repeating design that gives us a glimpse into your holiday traditions.

Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close November 13 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins November 15. Winners will be announced November 29*. See official rules.

*In recognition of the Thanksgiving holiday, voting in the Holidays Around the World Design Challenge will be open for two weeks.

Large Scale Black and White | Entries due by November 27

Entries in the Large Scale Black and White Design Challenge will preview on wallpaper during voting. Featured design: Red Hens by threebearsprints

What’s black and white and bold all over? Your entry in the Large Scale Black and White Design Challenge! Inspired by the growing trend in modern wallpaper and home décor, these large-scale designs pack a punch even though they use just two colors. Whether you’re inspired by geometric shapes, florals, retro art or your favorite trend, the key to this challenge is thinking BIG and using large design elements. Spoonflower’s wallpaper has a set width of 24”, so the ideal size of your design elements should be a width that will evenly repeat over 24”. Larger design elements will repeat twice across your wallpaper when they’re 12” wide. Before you start your artwork, be sure to review our tips for designing large scale patterns here. Color variations and colors outside of black and white will not be accepted.

Entries will be previewed on the wallpaper mockup featured above. Submissions close November 27 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins November 29. Winners will be announced  December 6. See official rules.
