DIY Fleece Menorah Wall Hanging for Hanukkah | Spoonflower Blog

Gather your family around a fleece menorah to celebrate the eight nights of Hanukkah! Spoonflower artist and cut-and-sew connoisseur, Heidi Kenney, created a beginner-friendly fat quarter project that is equal parts fun and festive. If you’ve been looking for a flame-free way to celebrate the festival of lights, we’ve found the answer. (Note: As of March 2023, we are phasing out our Fleece fabric and launching Polartec® Fleece, which will also work great for this project!

Materials

  • 1 Polartec® Fleece fat quarter of the Cut-and-Sew Menorah by heidikenney
  • 19 inch dowel rod
  • String or ribbon
  • 1/2 yard iron-on stabilizer
  • Fabric scissors
  • Craft scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Glue
  • Velcro

1. Cut out your fabric.

Cut out the menorah, candles and instructions. Be careful cutting out the menorah panel as this will be your finished banner. When cutting out the candles, I recommend leaving a small amount of the light blue border around all four sides.

2. Attach the stabilizer.

Using the polyester setting on your iron, adhere the fusible stabilizer to the backside of the menorah and candle panels.

3. Create the dowel rod pocket.

Fold back the top edge of the menorah panel on the fold line to create a channel for your dowel rod. Use a sewing machine to sew across the stitch line.

4. Attach the dowel rod and string.
Slide the dowel rod through the pocket on the menorah panel and attach the string on both ends of the rod. There are a few different methods of attaching the string so you can choose the method you prefer:

  1. Glue the string to the ends of the dowel rod.
  2. Tie the string around the ends of the dowel rod.
  3. Drill a small hole on both ends of the dowel rod, push the string through the hole and tie a knot at the ends of the string to secure in place.

5. Attach the velcro.

Cut out your Velcro into 1-1.5 inch pieces and attach one piece to the backside of each candle and the other piece to the menorah panel as marked, following the instructions on the package.
