December’s design challenge inspiration will test your creativity as we explore a wide range of themes. From four-legged friends to one-of-a-kind tattoos (and everything in between!), there’s bound to be something for every type of artist. Keep reading to find out which themes will pique your interest most (we hope all of them!) during December’s design challenge.
Year of the Dog / Results Announced December 14
February’s celebration of the Lunar New Year also welcomes a new zodiac sign, and 2018 is the Year of the Dog. It’s said that people born in the Year of the Dog have the gift of great realism combined with a keen sense of observation, so this week we’re challenging you to create a repeating design inspired by what Year of the Dog means to you. From your four legged friends to a more zodiac approach, we can’t wait to see which direction you take! Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close December 5 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins December 7. See official rules.
Arctic Animals / Results Announced December 21
Bundle up because we’re heading to the North Pole for this week’s challenge. We’ll be the first to admit that we’d take the North Carolina heat over frigid temperatures any day, but the animals that call the arctic home have adapted to freezing temperatures much better than we ever could. Overcome the cold and create a repeating design featuring any of the creatures (narwhals, whales, polar bears just to name a few!) you might see scurrying across the snowy tundra. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close December 12 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins December 14. See official rules.
Tattoos / Results Announced December 28
The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word “tatu” which means “to mark something.” Love them or hate them, tattoos have evolved over the years to become a way for artists to wear and express their artistic style. This week, we challenge you to create a repeating design inspired by a tattoo style that catches your eye. From vintage to new school, American Traditional to watercolor, we can’t wait to see how you make your mark in this week’s challenge. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close December 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins December 21. See official rules.
Center Stage / Results Announced January 4
We’re pulling up the red velvet curtain and shining the spotlight on your designs this week! Can you overcome stage fright to create a repeating pattern inspired by the actors, dancers, musicians and entertainers who are stepping onto the center stage and into the spotlight? We can’t wait to see which designs get a standing ovation and grab a spot in the winner’s circle. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close December 26 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins December 28. See official rules.
