For the month of August, we’re heading back to our classic design challenge format…with a little twist halfway through! Next month, enjoy themes that will challenge you to think outside the design box, including one theme created and voted on by the Spoonflower community. Keep reading to see which theme won the community’s vote and find out what other fun design themes we’ve dreamt up for this month!
Mark your calendars! On August 21, our friends in the US will have the opportunity to witness what is being called the Great American Total Solar Eclipse. Moon gazers from all over the US (even the world!) will be making a trip to Spoonflower’s headquartered state of North Carolina and neighboring South Carolina to see the spectacular moon phase for themselves. While the eclipse may only last for a few minutes, a fabric design celebrating this “once in a blue moon” event will last forever! Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21″ x 18.” Submissions close July 25, 2017 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins July 27, 2017. See official rules.
Stock up on your favorite car snacks, turn on the tunes and get our your maps because it’s time for one last summer road-trip! For this challenge, create a design inspired by the open roads that await. Whether you’re venturing through a new city or drafting the perfect treasure map, show us how you’re inspired by this helpful navigation tool. Hand illustrating your map is not required but do your best to create an illustrated style. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21″ x 18.” Submissions close August 1, 2017 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins August 3. See official rules.
For this week’s challenge, we’re reversing the roles and letting our community (you!) choose the design challenge theme! In July, we received over 250 challenge themes submitted via social media and took to the blog for a round of voting to find this week’s community chosen theme: Swedish Folk Art. Inspired by fables and allegories and depicted through repeating geometric shapes, this type of art was created to bring pleasure to everyday tasks. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21″ x 18.” Submissions close August 8, 2017 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins August 10, 2017. See official rules.
Channel your inner flower child this week to create a geometric, eye-catching, and bold design inspired by a lifestyle full of adventure! Just like the travelers way of life, let your artistic vision run free for this week’s challenge. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21″ x 18.” Submissions close August 15, 2017 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins August 17, 2017. See official rules.
The Memphis style was characterized by ephemeral design featuring colorful decoration and asymmetrical shapes. While not loved by many when it was first introduced in 1980, it quickly grew in popularity during the ‘90s. Squiggly lines, graphic patterns, and bold colors are just a few ways to create the signature Memphis style. Show us how you interpret this bold style with a Memphis inspired design. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21″ x 18.” Submissions close August 22, 2017 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins August 24, 2017. See official rules.
One Grand Prize Winner each week will receive $200 in Spoondollars. The winner will also receive additional exposure in our email newsletters, professional photography of their printed designs, and social media mentions.
The 2nd place winner will receive $100 in Spoondollars.
The 3rd place winner will receive $50 in Spoondollars.
4th through 10th place winners will receive a $20 Spoondollar credit.
Each of the top 25 entries, determined as set forth above, not receiving one of the foregoing prizes will be automatically proofed for sale in the Spoonflower Marketplace (approximately a $5 value) (the “Runner Up Prize”) if winners are verified sellers.
Good luck designers! We can’t wait to see how you get creative this month!
