After many (we may have lost count!) customer requests for the perfect swaddle fabric, we are excited to introduce Spoonflower’s Organic Sweet Pea GauzeTM! From cuddly receiving blankets to beach cover-ups, our newest natural addition to the Spoonflower lineup is a 100% organic cotton double gauze fabric. You may have heard it referred to as muslin or cheesecloth. This gauze crinkles when washed, resulting in a breathable, textured fabric perfect for swaddling. For the best look and softest feel, we recommend keeping designs light and scattered. Click here to see our top gauze tips.

I bought this material for burp cloths. Should I just use this fabric for the front and back or should I use another fabric for the middle layer? I don’t want liquid soaking through to clothing?
Hi Mary,
Great question! For a burp cloth where the liquid doesn’t soak through, we recommend either doubling up your gauze layers or doing one layer gauze and one layer towel material. Other Spoonflower employees have used single-layer burp cloths and double-layer and found the double layer is a bit more friendly on messes! I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!
Take care,
Amy

Is it possible to make a baby quilt out of this fabric?
Hi Chelsey,
We would recommend making a Organic Sweet Pea Gauze Cheater Quilt with Fill-a-Yard™ but we would not suggest using the gauze for a quilt that requires piecing. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to send us a message at [email protected]
I’m really disappointed in this – it is super rough, definitely the most rough of spoonflower’s fabrics. I understand that no chemical softeners have been used… but jeepers! it’s too coarse for me as an adult to make a dress from.
And I’ve seen suggestions to put it in the dryer wth a dryer sheet – but dryer’s aren’t as commonplace in Australia, and I don’t own one.. Also, I buy organic fabrics because I care about the environment, so I prefer to line dry them.
Hi Talitha,
Thank you for using Spoonflower and we’re sorry to hear the Organic Sweet Pea Gauze was not as soft as you had expected. The fabric will continue to soften as its washed and once it’s dried, you may want to try steaming the fabric. We also recommend choosing designs that use light colors with a scattered repeat. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to send us a message at [email protected].

Hi Ashly,
Thanks so much for your feedback and we’re sorry to hear the gauze was not as you had expected. We are always looking for ways to improve and we’ve passed along your feedback to our product development team.
I actually would like to delete my previous post because after the 4th wash this stuff is actually pretty soft now :/ Can you delete the one I posted yesterday because it wont let me! and this one so I can re-review! Its actually soft enough now I made a bib and baby is LOVING it!
Hi Ashly,
Thanks for sharing the update on your Organic Sweet Pea Gauze! We’re happy to hear baby is enjoying their new bib.
Do you need to have a backing for this material or is just finishing the edges fine?
Hi Bailee,
Finishing the edges before washing is all you need for Organic Sweet Pea Gauze blankets!
I just got mine and I agree it is pretty rough. I will keep washing it a few times and report back if I found anything that softened the fabric. I wouldn’t swaddle my baby nude in this but it would be good for wrapping them up with clothing on!
Hi Ashly,
Thanks so much for your feedback and we’re sorry to hear the gauze was not as soft as you had expected. You might also want to try a dryer sheet to enhance softness and we look forward to hearing your feedback once you’ve washed the fabric again.
Is there a tip to keep this fabric soft? After sewing and washing (on cold water and low dry) fabric is really rough, and not good at all for a baby swaddle ????
Hi Aubrey,
We are sorry to hear that the fabric is not what you expected. Since the cotton fibers are organic, this fabric has never been treated with chemical softeners. As with most natural fiber fabrics, the hand and softness will improve with wear and further washing. You might also try a dryer sheet to enhance softness.
