Spoonflower is revolutionizing the way you replenish your fabric stash! Choose from basic yard templates (half yards horizontal or vertical) or project templates (cheater quilts and infinity scarves) and select the designs you want printed. With multiple designs filling a yard, you can now get the fabric you want in just the amounts you need. Check out some of our fave projects below for Fill-A-Yard™!
Cheater Quilts
With our new Fill-A-Project cheater quilt templates, you can complete an heirloom-quality large quilt in record time. Up your quilt game with custom fabric you designed yourself or find those just-right designs in our Marketplace.
Each Fill-A-Project™ is offered in a limited selection of fabric types.
For our cheater quilt tops, you can choose from Petal Signature Cotton®, Cotton Poplin or Organic Cotton Sateen. Don’t forget to choose yardage for the backing!
For quilt backing fabric, the quilters among us love Organic Cotton Sateen, Petal Signature Cotton, Cotton Poplin, Satin and Minky for a soft and colorful touch.
Infinity Scarf
Create two scarves with just two yards! This is one of our favorite beginner sewing projects. Once you order your infinity scarf fabric, check out our favorite infinity scarf tutorial to learn how to easily put it together with just a few seams. Use Poly Crepe de Chine to create a lightweight, sheer scarf, or use Modern Jersey or Cotton Spandex Ultra to create a soft, stretchy scarf.

There will be zero upcharge for templates and the commission structure will be a percentage of the yard based on how much your design covers. Templates follow current pricing by substrate. Currently, you will also earn commissions on Fill-A-Yard projects you order for yourself using your own designs — this is in lieu of the 10% designer discount on regular fabric purchases. This ‘commission’ will show up in your account as spendable Spoondollars, but will not be included on any total earnings for tax purposes.
There are two great reasons to build Collections now. First, in order to fill a template with multiple designs, the designs must all be within the same collection — which can now include designs from any designer in the marketplace! Second, shoppers love groups of designs curated around themes or colorways for their projects. Designers — make sure to add titles and descriptions to your Collections with theme keywords and colors so that others can find them easily when searching for those perfect pairings. Start creating and have fun!

Does the Fill A Yard fabric come with an additional border around it to use for seam allowance? Or is the fabric printed edge to edge so that some of the design is lost in the seam allowance?
Thank you,
Sherri
Hi Sherri and good question!
And yes, Fill-A-Yard comes with white selvage around each edge.
To see what the selvage looks like, the following post has some great photos https://blog.spoonflower.com/2016/04/05/how-to-make-a-crocheted-rag-rug-using-fabric-scraps/ , along with a great idea for its reuse.

I have successfully made a fill a yard using a collection I made from different designers. I put it in my cart …. but when I go back to look at it …. all I get is black dots in a square. Is there a way to save my fill a yard so that I may look at my choices? Thank you
Hi Martha,
So great to hear you created your first Fill-A-Yard! Unfortunately, we do not currently have a way to review your Fill-A-Yard after it’s been created, but we hope to be able to offer this in the future.
Best of luck with your projects!

I have a similar question to the one just above. I have made a cheater quilt already with the 1 yrd but I want two yrds of what I made. I would love to use the 2 yrd pattern but it doesn’t have the fabric type I need for my quilt. So my question is, can I order 2 yrds of my 1 yrd that I have in my cart? And the cheater quilt comes already sewed together right?
Hi Vanessa,
The 1-yard cheater quilt fits fabrics which are 42″ wide (Petal Signature Cotton™ and Cotton Poplin) and the 2-yard cheater quilt fits select fabrics that are 54″ wide which is why you don’t see the same fabric options for those two products. Unfortunately, you cannot currently extend your 1-yard quilt into 2 yards but that would be something to consider for the future!
To answer your second question, the fabric does not come already sewn. What you will receive is 1 yard of fabric printed with your selected designs that you can then sew together yourself. For more tips on making the most out of the Fill-A-Yard® feature, see the blog post below:

I hope this helps!

I want to make a baby quilt with 4 to 6 different woodland design blocks. How can I get 6 different fabrics in 2 yards of fabric
Hi Margaret,
We recommend choosing the 2 Yard Cheater Quilt Template on the Fill-A-Yard page and then filling in consecutive blocks with the same design to achieve 6 different designs on a 2 yard piece. I hope that helps, but if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!
I’m trying to make the 2 yard cheater quilt. I went ahead for formatted by art to be 9″x9″ with 150 dpi as per instructed above in comments. However, when I try to made a quilt using the Cotton Sateen option, the artwork is off center and it won’t work for my design. Is there a different ratio for the Sateen? I tried to do the math and reformatted to 9.33″x9.33″ and that didn’t work either.
Hi Whitney,
We’re sorry for the unexpected trouble! If you’d like to send us an email at [email protected] with links to the specific designs you’re referring to, we’d be happy to investigate to see what’s causing the issue.

I mistakenly thought that this would be a way to have a piece of fabric printed with 6″ squares of photos that I had in my collection. After several frustrating hours, I still can’t get it to work and help people just sent me a tutorial on how to drag the spoon flower collections in. So I think now it’s not possible and I am giving up. It’s too bad – it seems a perfect solution for my project.
Hi Eva,
We’re sorry for the trouble! If you’d like to create a photo quilt using the Fill-a-Yard cheater quilt, we recommend resizing each of your photos to be 6″x6″ at 150 dpi *prior* to uploading to Spoonflower. Once you’re ready to create your quilt, make a collection with these new photos and then choose the 6″ square 1 yard cheater quilt template. We hope that helps, but if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!
I love the fill-a-yard idea, but I have issues with fill-a-project: why can’t I choose from all the list of fabrics?
I understand that, say, “Infinity scarf” template is supposed to help me sew a scarf, but I might use it to make little purses in cotton without the left overs I would get using the vertical split yard.
I hope you will consider removing this limit.
Thank you!
Hi Arianna,
Thanks so much for your feedback! Each Fill-a-Project™ template has a set width which limits the fabrics that can be used for each project. We are always working on ways to improve your Spoonflower experience and we’ll be sure to pass along your feedback to our development team.
I have done all of the things that you tell me to do and I still get an error that says
”something went wrong – please try again later”
