WHAT? Spring into a new creative habit and start your engines for our fastest-paced Design Challenge ever! We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our latest SpoonChallenge to create a new design each day! Tune in and check your inbox each day from March 1 to March 15 for a design prompt from a member of our creative community delivered via email and the blog. Share what you design using #SFDesignADay, and check out what your friends in design are creating as well!
HOW? If you’d like to join in on the SpoonChallenge, all you have to do is be sure to follow along by entering your email below! At the end of the challenge we will be choosing one of the 15 prompts on Tuesday, March 15 as the theme for a contest. From the time of the big reveal on Tuesday, you will have just 48 hours to tweak your design and enter that into our contest via the “contests” drop-down menu on your design page on our website. Voting will open to the public on Thursday, March 17th mid day.
*Participating in the Design-A-Day SpoonChallenge is not required to enter the contest at the end. However, participation will provide a big advantage as one of those daily prompts will be chosen for the contest theme.
WINNER PRIZES: The Grand Prize winner, as voted by our community, will receive a 3-month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud ($150 value) and $150 in Spoondollars. The two runners up will also receive 3-month subscriptions to Adobe CC, and all of those making a top-ten spot will receive $50 in Spoondollar credit.

Thursday, March 24: Winner announced in our newsletter and on the blog
- What if I already have an Adobe CC membership? Can I get a cash equivalent or transfer this prize?
If you already have a CC membership, Adobe will extend it for 3 months. This offer is non transferable, no cash equivalent will be awarded.
- Are the prizes going to be the same for each monthly contest going forward?
No. Spoonflower will be partnering with different brands and organizations each month, with new and different prizes based on the theme of that contest. For example, one month winners may see their design printed on a product for sale to the general public, or be awarded a licensing deal, etc.
- Why are you changing the structure of Design Challenges?
We are hoping that the new contest structure will re-invigorate designers and also bring a higher quality to the contests overall. In re-evaluating how our contests can better serve our designer community, we decided that partnering with new brands and offering bigger, better prizes to launch design careers instead of simply giving one week of spotlight would translate to a bigger boost for the winners. The whole top 10 will also now be receiving prizes, instead of just the winner.
- When you say design a day, do you mean just an illustration or creating a full on repeat pattern? When I hear design I think illustration.
A “design” can be anything! From a simple doodle to a full on complex seamless repeat. The idea is just to get started creating an element that can be repeated to create a workable surface pattern once it’s been uploaded to Spoonflower.
- I want to share my Design-A-Day challenge creation, but not sure how to use #SFDesignADay since I’m not on social media.
You do not have to share on social media or anywhere at all, this is just an option to make the challenge more fun and to foster community. The best part about any SpoonChallenge is getting support and inspiration from the community, and using hashtags makes that super easy and fun. Follow along on your own if you prefer, or post your design photos to any social media platform including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or even Pinterest. In the description, just write out the hashtag #SFDesignADay, so that anyone searching this hashtag can find your design.
- How the heck am I supposed to create a design in just one day? I’m busy!
That’s why it’s a challenge! We understand that not everyone will have the time to create a design every single day. Catch up on the prompts when you have a block of time, or, commit to spending just 15 minutes or less creating your design element each day. It does not need to be anything elaborate or fancy, see this as a short creative exercise each day to help you build a habit. Maybe you have plenty of time to devote each day to design? That’s great! Spend as much or as little time as you have and go at your own pace.
- Will you still be making winning designs available for purchase?
At the end of the SpoonChallenge we will run a contest choosing one of the themes from our daily design prompts. We will still be making the top 10 available for sale.
- Will there still be a fat quarter bundle available of the top 10 winners of the contest portion?
- If you cannot participate in every single one of the fifteen days..can you participate in any?
Of course! This is your challenge. Feel free to participate as much or as little as you wish, and pace it out to your desired speed.
- Will you ever bring back the Weekly Design Challenges?
Anything is possible.
- How do I enter the contest at the end of SpoonChallenge?
The contest portion of the SpoonChallenge does not open until March 15th. You will have a 48 hour window to enter before the contest closes, and you can enter directly from the design page as in the past.
- When will you announce the theme for the March 15th contest?
The theme for the contest portion of SpoonChallenge will be revealed on Tuesday at 9 AM EDT on the blog and in your email inbox if you’re subscribed to the challenge. Not subscribed yet? Use the box above to sign up.
- Do I have to participate in the SpoonChallenge in order to enter the contest?
No, not at all. But since the theme will be chosen from our list of SpoonChallenge themes, participating in the SpoonChallenge will definitely give you a leg up!
