With every craft skill we have to start somewhere, and approaching your first sewing project can be daunting. One of the best first projects to attempt on your sewing machine is a simple pillow with a zipper opening so that it can be removed and washed. It comprises two pieces of fabric, straight line stitching and a zipper – it could not be more simple. And you get the benefit of making something new and fabulous to add to your home or to give to a friend.
Create your own zipper pillows using this same fabric designed by Lia by heading over to her Spoonflower shop!
Beautiful! Love these clear and simple instructions on making a zippered cover for a pillow form.
I love it!! I really want to make some outdoor pillows this year for in our sunroom area where they would need to be a bit sturdier. I can’t wait to start!
That was really well done-very clear!
Wonderful, thank you! I have never thought to use a basting stitch first. That will be so much easier:)
After I measure where the zipper goes do I stitch overy the basting stitch? What length? It’s very hard to tell on the video and you go so fast! Thanks!
Great tutorial. Love the photos, which makes it easy for beginners (like me) to follow.
Thanks for the tips, Ellen!
Pro tip: use a pillow form that is 2″ LARGER than your pillow cover. It will look so much better plump than an under filled, loose cover. Also, 1/2″ seam allowance is always used in home dec sewing.
Thanks. I was wondering what the seam allowance. She mentioned 3/8 for the one area, but never said later if that was still the same.
Thanks!
Very simple, very helpfull, easy to lean, thank you
