**Voting for the Staff Challenge starts this Thursday, March 13th!**
It is a Spoonflower employee's most eagerly awaited time of year — the Staff Challenge! Yes, it's the time of year when the tables turn and Spoonies create their own surface designs for the world to judge. Take a peek at what happened behind the scenes last week:
Kelly reacts to this year's challenge.
In previous years we asked team members to create entire projects made from fabric they designed, the outcomes of which included 2012's LED-lit world map and last year's fully quilted Map of Spoonlandia. But we decided that this year we'd try something a little different to both simplify the competition a little and to up the ante.

Inspired by our love of home improvement and our need to keep supplies out of the range of normal craft supplies, Darci and I headed to our nearest Lowe's, and, oh! the riches we found! From paint swatches to metal washers to colored twine to painter's tape, the giant hardware store proved to be quite the source for design inspiration.
Each contestant received basic design supplies and a set of mystery hardware items. Folks had to include no fewer than 3 mystery supplies in the construction of their design. While basic supplies included cardstock, craft paper, twine, a glue stick, scissors, and paint swatches, the mystery pool of supplies might contain mailbox letters, painter's tape, colored twine, laminate wood flooring samples, and metal washers.

No Photoshop?! No problem! Eloisa whips up a lovely repeating pattern in no time.
Each contestant had a different set of mystery supplies, and while the initial reaction may have been horror (see above), in the end, it was a great exercise in stretching our creativity–even Janet & Kelly had fun!
The range of designs and motifs created from everyday hardware store supplies is nothing short of amazing, so be sure to vote for your favorite design this Thursday!
The grand prize winner of this year's Staff Challenge will receive a custom chair upholstered with his or her winning fabric design, created by the same folks who've created all of our beautiful office furniture, Select Furniture in High Point!
