Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, a day to honor the achievements of women around the world and to focus on opportunities for growth. These five makers and creative businesswomen are a celebration of this year’s theme, “Inspiring Change!”
Liz Forkin Bohannon founded Sskeo Designs, “an ethical fashion brand that hires high potential women in Uganda to make sandals to enable them to earn money through dignified employment that will go directly towards their college educations and ensure they will continue pursuing their dreams.”
Donna Wilson makes odd knitted creatures, curious cushions, luxurious lambswool blankets, and other knitted home goods and strives make products people can connect with and to keep craftsmanship alive in the UK.
Painter Lily Stockman and her sister Hopie founded Block Shop, a textile company in Bagru, India that works with a cooperative of hand block printing artisans. Using hand-carved wooden blocks and vegetable, mineral, and other non-toxic dyes, they make and sell scarves to invest in an environmentally-sustainable future for an ancient textile tradition.
Thief and Bandit is artist, woodcarver, and designer Amie Cunningham’s line of clothing and homegoods. Made using organic jersey and water-based inks, her fabrics are hand printed on giant silkscreens and her goods are handmade in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
