Coincidental to our upcoming fabric-of-the week contest theme of hat patterns, we were recently sent a copy of Hat Shop, a new book all about hats to sew compiled by Susanne Woods. To me, this is project sewing serendipity because the onset of spring always sends me on a hat hunt. After a long winter spent indoors keeping warm but getting pasty, it's great to get out to walk, work in the garden, and chase the kids while they scooter down the street, and I need a hat to keep the sun off my tender, un-sunned scalp and face. Until now, I've always leaned towards straw hats but this book is making me reconsider. I don't think I quite realized how many different styles of hats were sewable–great news for me with my big old head that's hard to fit!
My favorite adult style–and a timely one for this warm, sunny spring–is the classic sun hat pattern created by Dory Smith Graham of WorthyGoods. It's big and floppy, and you can fold up the brim for brunch or put it down for a sunny gardening day when you need more shade. If you're more likely to sew up a hat for a kid than for yourself, though, there are plenty of good patterns for little people, too, including a super-cute, three-eyed monster cap created by Spoonflower's own Drea Roman (aka, Ttoz). There are also some good-looking hat projects for guys and some fascinator patterns that have inspired an unprecedented crafting craving in my teenage daughter–really, this book pretty much covers our entire family's hat needs!
If you find yourself in a hat mood this season, too–and Southern Hemisphere folks, there are winter hats in this book as well–just make a comment here or on the relevant Facebook post for a chance to win our advance copy. (Hat Shop hasn't been officially released yet so you'll be able to see and sew from it before anyone else!) As always, leave your Spoonflower name or other identifying info in your comment so that we can track you down easily if you're the winner, and do let us know what you think the perfect hat is, too. Entries close next Tuesday, 4/24 at 7pm EST, and we'll announce a winner on Wednesday. This giveaway is now closed and we'll be announcing a winner shortly.
Last week's winner of the Crafty Chloe book and Heather Ross doll quilt fabrics was Laura Pearce–enjoy, Laura!
Ooooh, ME ME! I’ve been DYING to make some hats! Looking forward to your upcoming theme contest as well.
I need to make hats for my husband who is bald and has such a big head no commercial hat will fit him (except one we found years ago which is hanging on by a thread). He’d look great in a three eyed monster cap 😀

This would be useful to have.
I just adore hats….and would love spending time working up as many hat patterns as there are in this fabulous looking book! Since I have a larger-than-most-women head, most of the adorable hats I come across are too small for me 🙁
Thanks for the opportunity to win this book-keeping my fingers crossed!

I just love hats. Grew up around hats, my mom used to design them. Crochet mostly. I have too many hats to count. Even have a 1920s cloche and a 1830s bonnet that I made in a millenary class. So this book would be awesome to own. I’ll still buy it when it comes out. Totally awesome:)
My mother and I would have so much fun with this book! She’s crazy about hats and has made a few of her own recently.
What a great book! I’m really looking forward to the hat fabrics, too! I love hats of all kinds!

it would be pretty cool to know how to sew hats. I know how to knit them but it’s always good to add new tools to the arsenal
A fascinator would be cool! nansikay@hotmail.com

Tragically I only look good in hats with eye veils, and since they’re a little pricey I’d love to be able to make them!

I made a ‘newsboy’ cap for my husband and another friend of ours for a 1920s party. I’d love some more hat ideas! staceyvan_keuren at Spoonflower here…
I look silly in almost all hats (especially the hard-hat I sometimes have to wear for work) But I would love to win this book for my avid hat making friend AJ.

Laura, I’m super flattered you’re crushing on one of my hat styles! If you happen to sew one up, please share @ worthygoodstextile@gmail.com , I’d be thrilled to see your version.
I can never have too many hats, though my husband might disagree. Making my own would be wonderful! (spoonflower name = craftymapmaker)
These look awesome! I don’t usually wear hats (I think I look weird in them), but this book would probably make me try a few new ones… (robyriker)
I wear ’em and would love to have guidance on makin’ ’em!
I would love to win this book. I’m a seamstress and I picked up my love of sewing and hat making from my great-grandmother, the late Sister Elizabeth Ashton 1912-2006, she made everything she wore and her accessories up until she suffered from arthritis. I think this book will allow me the pleasure and how-tos to carry out her hat-making dream. Thanks for this contest.
I want to make many hats for me and my friends! We enjoy looking fancy.
I’d like to attempt a hat! I’m trying to incorporate more sewing this year. Can’t think of a better way to start creating than with this book!
This book looks fun!
I make my own hats because, unfortunately I have a big head, haha and I can’t find hats in the stores to fit me, so I’ve started making fun pill box hats, fascinators for myself and my friends — so fun, and it would be awesome to learn more hat making tips from this book!
Ooh, I would love to make some beautiful hats; what a great give-a-way.
Oh wow awesome – I’ve been dying to make hats – I especially love vintage styles – I am sure I’d have a blast with this book

I love hats and have many. Most of which are vintage! I look good in all hats, have not met one yet that I cannot wear. Best of all, I love the good old Southern Belle hats, of which I have quite a collection. I mow the yard in a hat, wear a hat when I go to town to shop, every occasion deserves a wonderful hat. I would love to add this book to my hat pattern collection. Thank you for offering this awesome book!

I’ve been intrigued by millinery for a while, but never delved into the craft. Would love to get my hands on this book. It looks like a great introduction to hats, and I love the vintage styles!
What a fun new book!
I loved to win this great book!

My daughter is trying to make hats and we would both love this book please for inspiration! Thanks.
This is the book I need! Every year I get to go to Churchill Downs and coming up with just the right hat is often an exercise in frustration. Fresh inspiration would certainly help.
My daughter is making hats and we would both love this book for inspiration. Thankyou!
I love hats. I have knitted and crocheted them. So, I would like to try to sew a hat also.
WANT!!!
Ooh, I’ve been into knitting hats this past winter, but it’s warmer now. It seems like this book would be perfect for branching out. (mousmonkey on spoonflower)
You can NEVER have enough hats! OR PATTERNS for HATS! They exhude an elegance that cannot be surpassed by ANY other accessory! I have had a passion for HATS, especially Vintage hats, ever since I was a little girl. They remind me of my beautiful Nanna and Mum, who had to waer hats and wigs due to her alopeca and Lupus, and sadly departed well before their years. What an absolutely wonderful giveaway! Thank you so so much for the opportunity to win Susan’s HAT SHOP Book!!!! I am BUSTING to learn how to make them!!!
Blessings!

I have been wanting to make hats for some time! I live at the beach in NC and there numerous garden parties due to the beautiful weather and being in the South, that means a hat!! My family is in the mountains so it’s cold there and you guessed it, that means a hat. This book would be a great kickstart for the season!
