How it works (updated 7-23-2009)
Each week (starting on Nov. 24, 2008) we will offer a single design by a member of the Spoonflower community for sale as a limited edition, special fabric. Designs must be submitted for consideration by the designer, but each week the winning fabric will be selected by community voting. We will offer the winner for sale for exactly one week and no more through the Spoonflower Etsy shop.
Voting
Each week we will choose six four fabric designs submitted by their creators and open them to voting from the community. The results of voting will be publicly viewable.
Prize
If your design is chosen as the fabric of the week you will receive five yards of free quilting-weight cotton fabric from any of your own designs (or from a future fabric of the week selection). That's approximately $100 of fabric. You will NOT be paid any additional compensation based on commissions or royalties from sales.
If you enter your design, we may or may not offer it to the community for possible selection as the fabric of the week. Only the winner will receive the free fabric, although we may send fabric samples to the designers of the fabrics that do not win. The best motivation for submitting a design is the respect and attention of an amazing community of your peers.
More Q&A
What if I don't want my design to be purchased by other people?
We will never sell or offer for voting any design without explicit permission from its creator. Making your design public on Spoonflower does NOT mean that it will appear in a fabric-of-the-week contest. In order to appear in the contest you must specifically submit a design using the form below.
Can I submit more than one design?
Please submit no more than one design each week. If we don't immediately select a submitted design as one of the choices for voting, we may select it for a subsequent week's contest. But we will always notify you, the designer, before we put it up for voting.
Am I giving up copyright of my design by entering it?
You are not giving up ownership of your design, but by entering a design in the contest you are giving us the non-exclusive right to distribute and sell it royalty-free for up to a week. You will always be credited for your design and you are free to continue to sell it on your own now and in the future.
Why can't I sell my designs through Spoonflower?
We plan to allow you to sell your designs through Spoonflower soon. When we do that you'll be compensated. Partly because Spoonflower has members all over the world, building a marketplace of thousands of individual designers is pretty complicated and we are still a very new company. So in the interim we're offering this fabric-of-the-week contest with a potential reward of five yards of free fabric. If you, the community, like this idea, we will continue to develop it. Please always feel free to let us know what you think by emailing us.
Note that all nominated designs must be:
- Your own (you cannot nominate other people's designs or use designs based upon other people's work)
- Designs that are already uploaded to your Spoonflower account
- Public (to edit which of your designs are public, visit the Designs page in your Spoonflower account.). Please submit no more than one design for the contest each week. Thanks!
While at this time we do not require that a design submitted to the contest have been purchased first (by the designer), consider that it's probably a good idea to at least see for yourself what your design looks like on fabric before entering it in a public contest. Swatches are only $5!
