Regular readers know that a few weeks ago we launched custom gift wrap. This past week we challenged designers in our contest to think about birthday designs that would look good on wrapping paper. The winner, chosen from a field of great entries, is "Party Animals" by Ttoz Designs. Congrats to Ttoz and the rest of the top ten this week!
This time around we asked for sailing fabrics, but required designers to use a restricted palette of colors in their designs. The result, I know you'll agree, is an amazing group of fabrics (one that will make a lovely fat quarter bundle). The winner this week was veteran Spoonflower artist (whose day job is physician) Dennis Bennett of Frankfurt, Germany. Congratulations, Dennis!
If you're into a country decor style, you have choices aplenty when it comes to chickens, from fabrics to wallpapers to welcome mats. But what if you're more of a chicken-loving modernist? Where, until now, could you go for your pop art chicken fabric projects? This week we're pleased to congratulate another first-time contest winner, Anna Kuipers, and nine other designers whose work won the most votes in this week's challenge.
Here in North Carolina we've got more sowing going on these days than sewing, as the spring weather right now is just perfect for gardening. But when the crafting bug does strike, we now have the perfect fabrics for the season in the form of the top ten from our Gardening Tools contest. Congratulations to first-time winner Alisse Courter of Brooklyn for her winning fabric!
This week's contest has given us a set of ten unbelievably cute fabrics, all of which include baby animals. If you're not at least tempted by this week's limited-edition fat quarter bundle, then you need to get your heart checked. Our winner this week is talented Dutch designer Heleen van Buul. Congratulations to Heleen and the rest of the top ten!
We asked the community to submit fabric designs inspired by the idea of living in a Jane Austen novel and they came up with a broad array of styles and interpretations that turned out to be a lot of fun to peruse. The top spot goes to Jean Maze, a first-time winner who put together a design based on quotes from the novels paired with objects from Jane Austen's era of history. Congrats to Jean and to the rest of the top ten!
With the Easter holiday nearly upon us, in our most recent contest we challenged designers to create fabrics featuring painted eggs. The winner is French designer Virginie Ozanon, whose 'Easter Joy!' fabric you can buy on its own or as part of a fat quarter bundle that includes all of the top ten designs from this week's contest. Keep in mind that the painted egg fat quarter fabric bundle will be available only through April 3rd. Congratulations to the top 10 designers!
The winner of our lighthearted, fabric-centric tribute to International Women's Day is one of our favorite designers, Miriam Bos (Irrimiri) of the Netherlands. Check out her fabric and the rest of the top ten, or buy yourself a specially priced fat quarter bundle with all of them.
This year, March is coming in with both lions and lambs. For our most recent contest we asked designers to create fabrics that included both of the signature animals of March. Our winner is the talented UK designer Alex Morgan (Spellstone), but you can see all of the top ten designs on our contest page.
For this week's contest we asked each designer to create a cut & sew pattern for a slip to fit a warmable animal-themed pillow -- a pillow that can be filled with feed corn, flaxseed or something similar and then warmed in a microwave to create a soft, snuggly friend for cold winter nights. The entries were almost too cute to vote. The winner, however, was a little dachshund named Sally created by Australian designer Laura Wright. Congratulations to Laura and the rest of the top ten!
The final vote totals from this week's contest were:
Inspired by Black History Month and the long, rich history of textile design in Africa, this week we asked competing designers to create African-inspired fabrics. The contest was full of beautiful, colorful riffs on the colors and patterns we associate with African design. The top spot goes to a design from first-time winnerMolipop, titled "Inspiration Africa." Congratulations to all who participated!
The final vote totals, for those who follow such things, were:
Who wouldn't want to wake up on Valentine's Day to a mailbox full of love letters? Our contest this week delivers all the love you need, so be sure to check out the top ten fabrics from our love-letters-themed competition. The winner is Amel24 of Shiny Orange Dreams, with the Sweetie Darling! design pictured above. Congratulations to her and the rest of the winners!
Let the good times roll! The top spot in our Mardi Gras fabric contest goes to first-time winner (and talented illustrator) Jeanine Henderson. Congrats to her and the rest of the top ten designers.
With Australia Day (January 26th) safely behind us, we're ready to announce the winner of our contest to increase dramatically the world's library of fabrics that feature kookaburras, koalas, kangaroos, echidnas and all the other odd and amazing fauna of Australia. The winner, we are pleased to report, is one of our favorite designers, Julie Lynch of Adelaide Hills in South Australia (CJLDesigns). Congratulations to Julie and to the other talented designers who made the top ten!
Around here we're big fans of the style of design known as toile de Jouy, popularized in the 18th century, which looks great on both fabric and wallpaper. What we like best about toiles is that while they come across as classical from an aesthetic perspective, the content of the designs offers a ripe target for modern commentary. For this contest, we asked designers to come up with a murder-mystery-themed toile de Jouy. The winner is Italian designer Chicca Besso's "Who Poisoned the Roses?" (pictured above). Congratulations to her and to the rest of the wonderful top ten!
The winner of our zodiac-themed contest this week is the talented UK designer behind Spellstone Studio, whose winning fabric manages, improbably, to combine astrological symbols with a chintz in a design that is both elegant and subtle. All of the top ten star-themed designs are, however, lots of fun. Congratulations to Spellstone and to the rest of the top 10 designers!
If you've ever sought to see a certain saucy someone sew slithering snakes slowly, then you'll be sorry to miss the Spoonflower staff quilting class we're holding this evening in the Greenhouse, where we'll use fabrics from this week's Year of the Snake contest to practice our skillssss. The winner of our snake fabric contest is none other than Irrimiri, one of our favorite designers from the Netherlands. Congratulations to her and to the rest of the terrific top 10!
This
week we had over 300 designers submit fabric designs to our snowflakes
contest. Our winner turns out to be an artist from a place where, we
assume, snow is less common than monsoons -- congratulations to designer
Maeli of Bandung, Indonesia! Her "Snowflake Forest" fabric won the most
votes, but be sure to check out the rest of the wonderful, wintry top
ten.
The final voting tally, for those who care about such things, was as follows:
In
our contest this week we asked designers to turn their attention to
cookies, cakes & candy that we can admire without actually eating.
The result was a tasty array of lovely fabrics, with the winning spot
going to "bonbon," a fabric by French designer Helene Michau. Congratulations to Helene and to the rest of the entrants who finished in the top ten!
People
often use Spoonflower to print their own quilt tags, or tags for
clothing they make, but until this year we hadn't seen many examples of
the use of our fabric for gift tags. So, inspired by a boom in lovely
tag designs, we decided to hold a contest around the idea. Keep in mind
that now gift tags can, in most cases, be ordered on peel & stick
wall decal material as well as cotton. The winner of our contest this
week is Amel24, a New York-based surface designer whom regular readers
will probably have spotted in the top 10 in many previous contests.
Congratulations to her and to the rest of the top 10 finishers!
