Submissions for all four October Design Challenges will open on Monday, September 12th, but we thought you might like to get a jump start! This month we’re getting a little love from our sister company, Roostery, who is offering amazing prizes to each week’s # 1 winner and the entire top 10. All tea-towel designs should be sized to fit on both an Orpington tea towel from Roostery, and a Spoonflower fat quarter of Linen Cotton Canvas Ultra (more on this later down in the post!).
Also known as the Volstead Act, prohibition in the United States banned alcohols by the name of brandy, rum, whiskey, wine and more from 1920 until 1933. Creativity loves constraints, of course, and hundreds of thousands of speakeasy clubs cropped up in every city shortly after the unenforceable law took effect. Whether you want to channel your inner Bonnie and Clyde or consider your creative life devoid of all alcohol as inspiration, for this one, bring your best speakeasy-style artwork. Deadline to enter is September 27th, 2016 at 3 PM Eastern Time. See official rules
In the South, there’s such a tradition of passing down prized family recipes, and tea towels are a beautiful way to preserve this aspect of family heritage. This week’s design challenge is your chance to transform your treasured handwritten recipes into tea towels, and these crafty creations are perfect for everyday use and as gifts to family around the holidays. Deadline to enter is October 4th, 2016 at 3 PM Eastern Time. Official Rules
What are the most important aspects of home life to you? What means the most to your loved ones? Keep it quirky or make it traditional–just be authentic! It’s time to round out the year with our annual calendar tea towel tradition–a ritual at once bringing closure and welcoming the oncoming year and all that it holds. Before 2016 comes to an end, design a tea towel calendar to bring on 2017. It’ll be New Year’s Eve before you know it! Need a template? Sure you do! Download our PSD calendar template here. Please note this template can only be used in Adobe Photoshop. Deadline to enter is October 18, 2016 at 3 PM Eastern Time Official Rules
Because the dimensions of Roostery’s Orpington tea towels (16” x 24”) are slightly smaller than a fat quarter of Linen Cotton Canvas (27″ x 18″), you’ll need to make your tea towel calendar and recipe designs a bit smaller than you may have in the past.
***The Orpington tea towels on Roostery are also oriented vertically instead of horizontally as on Spoonflower, because of this, Roostery will be rotating all tea towel designs automatically, so you don’t have to worry about your calendars and recipes being oriented the wrong way. A special edition of auto-rotated Orpington tea towels are now available here, showing the top 25 challenge winners!
To help guide you, we’ve created some examples, and put together a diagram below, along with a downloadable Photoshop document that you can simply drag and drop your design into, ensuring it will be sized perfectly for both Roostery tea towels, and Spoonflower’s Linen Fat Quarters. The rest of the top 10 winners each week will receive one custom Linen Cotton Canvas Orpington tea towel in their own winning design from Roostery ($17 value). For the first time in design challenge history, we will also be automatically making the top 25 designs available for sale in the Marketplace — no $5.00 swatch required! So if you’ve been having cold feet about entering one of our challenges, October is the perfect month to jump in.
The Maran slipper chair is perfect in a reading nook, as a set of two in the living room, or an accent chair in the bedroom. The Orpington tea towels are the workhorse of the kitchen, whether you use them for lint-free dish drying or keeping hands dry, they’ll bring a unique splash of color and personality to your kitchen. These 16” x 24” towels feature a folded hem, white top stitching, and a subtle white hang tab on the back. They will soften and become more absorbent with use.
All of the top 10 winners each week will receive one custom linen-cotton Orpington tea towel in their own winning design ($17 value).
Don’t forget, submissions officially open on Monday! That’s also when we’ll publish the official rules, fine print, and all of the nitty gritty details. In the meantime, we thought you might like some tea towel inspiration from Pinterest.
