We've narrowed it down to the final eight designers in this year's Fabric8 Design Challenge! While the finalists are hard at work creating their collections, we asked the designers to share a bit about themselves and their creative process. Check out the first our eight finalist profiles and stayed tuned for voting to open on July 17th!
Describe your typical day as a designer:
Well, first it's all about getting my two little ones ready and out the door to wherever they need to be that day. Once that is all sorted, I usually start my work day by putting on some tunes and grabing a pen and paper to start some rough doodles. I try to draw everyday. It doesn’t matter whether it’s drawings for a current project or something random that popped into my head. Then I spend a little time going through my mood boards on Pinterest or my scrapbooks of cut out images from home magazines and other interesting things I have found. Usually after this, I am full of ideas and inspiration and that’s when I sit down at my computer and create!
Where do you interact most often with your design community?
I have a couple of amazing friends, who like me, are crafty and creative. When I am around them, I feel so inspired. We will often go on shopping trips for inspiration or just sit and chat about our ideas and creative projects. I also have a wonderful Facebook group of artist friends from all around the world who all met during one of Lilla Roger’s MATS e-courses. They are all so talented and such a supportive and encouraging group.
What do you do to meet a tight deadline?
I work really hard and frequnetly stay up all night working on a project. When I have deadlines to meet, I shut down Facebook, turn my phone on silent and avoid all distractions so I can just get on with what I need to do. Working in my last job as a sign writer, specifically in print and design, I was always watching the clock as we had to account for every minute of our working day by filling in time sheets. This has taught me how to manage my time, especially when designing on the computer where you can so easily loose a few hours just mucking around with unnessesary things instead of doing anything productive.
How did you come up with your fabric8 design?
To be honest, the whole cosmic space theme was a hard one as I just didn’t feel like it was my kinda thing! But as I was sitting at my desk, looking out the window into the night sky, I spotted the Southern Cross and thought, that’s it! I’ll do constellations with lots of animals and a yummy, bright colour scheme. And off I went!
What's your favorite art medium?
I work digitally in both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator but have been working lots with traditional media lately and introducing that into my digital work for more depth, texture and interest.
Who is one of your favorite visual artists, textile or otherwise, and why?
There are so many!! Helen Dardik because she’s amazing. Zoe Ingram because she is also amazing! Rachael Taylor, Suzy Ultman. I think generally for me it’s artists that have developed their own individual style that is so unique that when your looking through Pinterest and come across their work, you know straight away that it’s them. I really admire that. I buy lots of art and prints and spend many hours admiring other peoples work.
What is your favorite song, album, or artist? Do you listen to music when you design?
Yes I NEED music while I am working! I’m not one of those cool people who knows all about the latest and greatest indie bands. I generally listen to boring top of the charts stuff, anything from Evanescence to Katy Perry, depending on my mood. At the moment I've got Florence and the Machine on an all day repeat!
If you could meet any character from a film, who would it be?
Where would you go if you could travel anywhere, and what is one thing you'd most like to see or do there?
A long long time ago when I was at school, it was career week and we were all asked what we wanted to be so we could be placed in appropriate work experience spots. Well, I wanted to be an Egyptologist! I was obsessed with ancient Egyptian art and culture. Unfortunately living in New Zealand at the time and a fair distance away from any desserts, I found myself at a veterinary clinic instead! So in answer to your question, I would travel to Egypt, find a hidden tomb, go digging and in the process discover the most amazing treasures and secrets of the past.
What do you think next year’s theme should be and why?
That’s a hard one! I’m thinking maybe Safari. I have a feeling it’s going to be big soon.
What are your plans if you win?
Get a babysitter for the kids and go out with my husband for dinner and a few celebratory drinks and feel super special and wonderful and awesome! And then it’s back to business, finding an agent, getting my name out there and hopefully one day, world domination! No, just kidding.
