I don’t know about you, but this week’s winter weather has me wanting to stay inside and wait for spring. While the snow and ice is starting to melt here in North Carolina, I’m still planning to spend my Valentine’s Day cuddled up and warm at home. If you’re staying in too, here are 5 things to inspire a celebration of all things heart shaped and lovey-dovey on Valentine’s Day!
FEAST YOUR EYES on all of the gorgeous heart designs on the Spoonflower Marketplace. Sign into your account to favorite the designs you love to keep track for future projects. I’m loving this Queen of Hearts collection by PennyCandy. The design featured here is Open Your Heart.
FOLD AN ORIGAMI HEART in five different ways. You can use them to embellish a valentine or simply give them to someone you love.
EMBROIDER a handwritten message from the heart.
RAID YOUR PAPER STASH (and perhaps the recycling you’ve avoided taking out in the snow!) to create beautiful, mini heart pinatas.
PRINT THIS PATTERN to create a patchwork anatomical heart and applique to anything you like!
Hope these will keep you from going stir crazy on a Valentine’s Day in!
Have a great weekend,

As you may have heard, Spoonflower's home state of North Carolina is buried under several inches of snow and ice at the moment, which has brought our little fabric factory temporarily to a grinding halt. As a result, we are postponing the Free Swatch Day that we had planned to run today and tomorrow (Feb. 13-14) for our new fabric, Modern Jersey. We will reschedule a new Free Swatch Day once we dig ourselves out. We'll go ahead and make the new fabric available today, but — with apologies — we're going to ask you to be patient and wait for your free swatches.
Thank you for understanding!
-The Spoonflower Crew
This past Saturday we invited friends from our local community to the Greenhouse, our classroom and community space here at Spoonflower's Durham HQ, for a Pillowcase Dress Sew-in to support an orphanage just getting started in the Philippines. At the end of the afternoon, we finished 47 beautifully handmade dresses!
We're so excited and inspired that folks from far and wide would like to contribute handmade dresses to this effort! If you'd like to participate remotely, we have all of the details you need here.
Nothing excites us like a good fabric design book, and Laurie Wisbrun's book Mastering the Art of Fabric Printing and Design is a great resource. Collected within are step-by-step tutorials for designing patterns (both digitally and by hand), a comprehensive section on printing techniques, and insider tips for developing a collection and bringing it to the marketplace. Beautifully illustrated with swatches of exquisite fabrics and hundreds of photos, Mastering the Art of Fabric Printing and Design is a key resource for anyone looking to learn the basics, expand their skill set, or find design inspiration. Two lucky winners will take home a copy of this lovely book and a fat quarter bundle of 10 designs selected by Laurie from the Marketplace!
Enter by Tuesday, February 18th, 2014 for a chance to win! The winner will be announced on the blog on Wednesday, February 19th. Congratulations to our gift wrap give away winner– Arden Shelton!
Make Modern Jersey Your Valentine On Feb. 13-14
** Due to the snowstorm here in North Carolina (which has brought our merry, fabric-loving crew to a grinding standstill), we are postponing the Free Swatch Day that was scheduled for Feb. 13-14. We'll announce a new date soon! Please accept our apologies. But we are still launching Modern Jersey, so feel free to try it out!
Just in time for Valentine's Day, we're over the moon with a new fabric. This Thursday we're launching our new Modern Jersey, a lightweight and stretchy 96% polyester, 4% spandex jersey knit with a lovely drape and a super-soft, cotton-like hand. When printed, this fabric features rich, deep color that holds up better to washing than any of our natural fiber options. With its weight, hand and stretch, our modern jersey is suitable for t-shirts, dresses, maxi skirts, headbands, tights, scarves, baby clothes, lightweight blankets, and many other projects. Check out a short video on sewing tips for Modern Jersey below, and then check out the details on the launch and our second Free Swatch Day of the year, which offers a chance to try this terrific new fabric for free.
Get A Free Swatch At Spoonflower
