A sheep for Cean

Congratulations to Cean Irminger! By winning her fourth (shoes, snow, apron) Fabric Of the Week contest with The Black Forest, she is now officially tied with SammyK as all-time champ. Following in the talented footsteps of SammyK, who donated her fourth win prize to Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary in New Mexico, Cean has requested that in lieu of receiving $100 in free fabric we make a donation on her behalf to Heifer.org, a great organization that provides livestock, training and services to small farmers and communities around the world. Fabrics Made From Paper Collages: Vote For the Next Fabric Of the Week

This week's Fabric Of the Week contest theme is about process. Using a collage created from paper as the source, we asked designers to create a fabric by scanning the collage. The idea was to showcase examples of fabric designs that have relied on a minimum of digital manipulation. The entries are terrific, as usual. After you finish voting, you might enjoy watching a short video about the collage process used by childrens' illustrator Eric Carle to create the art for his books, which include The Very Hungry Caterpillar (and many of the other titles that line our little girls' bookshelves).

Cheater Quilts Aplenty: Vote for your favorites from 128 designs

 

Wow! I didn't expect so many designs in this contest. The cheater quilt edition of our Fabric Of the Week contest is for designs set up to print on a yard of fabric. With the addition of batting and backing, the yard can then be quilted to give an impression of being composed of different pieces of fabric. From a technical perspective the entries in this contest are mostly large files set up to fill an entire yard, or most of a yard, of quilting-weight cotton. This is a great application of the strengths of digital printing and most of these designs will look stunning when you see them on real fabric. I hope photos of many of them will find their way into the Flickr group at some point.

Milktooth's Castaways Edge Out Cean Irminger's Shy Ness Monster By A Single Vote

In our closest Fabric Of the Week contest ever, Lisa Mirella's "Electronic Castaways" design has defeated Cean Irminger's "Shy Ness" monster by exactly one vote. Whew. Given current events in the Gulf of Mexico, it might have been appropriate to photograph the nautical winner with an oil stain seeping across the fabric... but that would have been a downer, no?
